Warsaw-based Zimmer Biomet Holdings has announced plans to move its corporate headquarters across town and donate its current headquarters building to Grace College.
Zimmer Biomet said it will relocate corporate HQ operations across town to its facility at 1800 W. Center St. in Warsaw, which is billed as the largest orthopedic manufacturing facility in the world. Spokesperson Troy Kirkpatrick said it also plans to move some of its manufacturing operations from its north campus in Warsaw to the Center St. facility.
Kirkpatrick told Inside INdiana Business that the orthopedic medical device manufacturer felt its current headquarters building could be put to better use.
“Given the fact that [there is] less utilization of office buildings, we thought that the community could have better use and better utilization of our headquarters building than what’s currently happening,” Kirkpatrick said. “So this collaboration and donation to Grace College couldn’t come at a better time.”
Grace College, located in nearby Winona Lake, is expected to gain ownership of the building at 345 E. Main St. in early 2027. The college plans to use the building to “advance its commitments to STEM education and orthopedic innovation,” especially as it works to meet a growing demand for skilled professionals in the orthopedic and medical technology sectors.
“This building represents an extraordinary opportunity for Grace College to further expand academic programs through our School of Science and Engineering and create new opportunities for students, researchers and industry partners alike,” Grace College President Drew Flamm said in written remarks. “We look forward to sharing more of our vision to advance Warsaw’s rightful place as the Orthopedic Capital of the World and drive innovation and workforce development for generations to come.”
The college’s project is part of its $100 million Catalyst Corridor project, which is designed to grow the Warsaw-Winona Lake corridor and is fueled by a $27 million grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.’s College and Community Collaboration program.
Zimmer Biomet has used the building as its global headquarters since 2001, and the company plans to maintain a presence in the building. But Kirkpatrick said consolidating operations to the Center St. location creates an ideal opportunity for the company.
“It just makes sense that this is the things are made. This is where the ideas are gathered. Let’s bring all that together,” he said. “When you bring your leadership team under the same roof as the manufacturing environment, you get a little bit more collaboration, less of the ivory tower feeling. Getting everyone together in the same building working together more closely, we see a lot of benefits there.”
In addition to moving some manufacturing operations from its north campus, Zimmer Biomet is also moving some manufacturing from its New Jersey facilities to Warsaw. However, Kirkpatrick said the moves will not result in any new jobs being created.
“If you look at our total output of production, we believe that with the consolidation of both New Jersey and then what we’re bringing from the north campus to the west campus, along with our innovation cycle … we believe our total production output, will actually be greater in the future than it is today,” he said.
Kirkpatrick said the entire project is part of a two-part philosophy for Zimmer Biomet: investing in the company and its people and operations in Warsaw, while also finding ways to invest in the community.
