A young tiger believed to have originated in Maharashtra’s Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary has spent nearly two years moving across central Maharashtra, covering more than 400 km and passing through at least five districts in search of a suitable habitat.
The tiger was recently photographed in Beed, more than 400 km from its presumed source, before disappearing from camera-trap surveillance for nearly 10 days. Forest officials have now traced it again in neighbouring Dharashiv district. The animal is currently moving along the Terkheda-Yeswandi stretch near the Bhoom and Dharashiv borders.
The tiger was not lost but out of sight
The brief disappearance of the tiger from surveillance did not mean that it was lost or missing in the conventional sense. The animal is wild and has been travelling independently through forests, hills and other suitable landscapes. Forest officials had deployed camera traps to track its movements, but no images were recorded for about 10 days after its last confirmed sighting.
The gap in surveillance ended on August 29, when the tiger was photographed near Yeswandi in Vashi tehsil of Dharashiv. Its latest movement has renewed attention on the landscape through which the big cat has been travelling.
How the Tiger covered more than 400 Km
The tiger’s movements have been tracked over an extended period. It was first spotted in the Ashti hills of Beed on December 10, 2025. The animal was seen in the same region again on July 27, 2026. On August 13, a cattle kill was reported in Brahmagaon. Following the incident, the Forest Department stepped up surveillance and installed additional camera traps.
The tiger was photographed again on August 20. It then went undetected for nearly 10 days before being traced near Yeswandi on August 29. According to forest officials, the tiger has travelled through parts of Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur and Ahilyanagar during the past two years.
Why did the young Tiger travel so far?
Long-distance movement is a natural part of tiger behaviour, particularly among young males searching for territory where they can establish themselves. Tigers need large home ranges with sufficient prey, water and cover. A young animal leaving its original habitat may travel considerable distances before finding an area that can support it.
In this case, the tiger’s continued movement through central Maharashtra suggests that it has been able to find enough food and water along the way. Its journey is also significant because the animal has crossed several districts while remaining within a landscape that is not traditionally associated with large, permanent tiger populations. Forest officials believe the availability of prey and water has helped sustain the tiger during its prolonged movement.
The bigger story could be Maharashtra’s wildlife corridor
The tiger’s journey is more than an unusual wildlife movement. It may also offer an important indication about the condition of the forest corridor connecting different habitats in the region. Officials believe the animal’s movements provide evidence that the natural corridor between Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and Yedshi Ramling Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary remains functional.
Wildlife corridors allow animals to move between forest patches in search of food, water, mates and new territories. Without such connections, populations can become isolated, increasing the risks associated with habitat fragmentation.
The Yedshi region has emerged as an important part of the tiger’s movements. Forest officials believe the animal could continue towards Naldurg and Yedshi. Range Forest Officer Amol Munde said the tiger is currently roaming the Terkheda-Yeswandi stretch along the Bhoom and Dharashiv borders and is likely moving towards Naldurg and Yedshi.
A Tiger’s journey across a human-divided landscape
For people, the tiger’s route cuts across district boundaries and familiar administrative divisions. For the animal, those lines simply do not exist. Its movement across Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur and Ahilyanagar shows how wildlife can use connected landscapes far beyond the boundaries of protected areas. The journey also underlines why forest corridors matter. A sanctuary may provide a secure core habitat, but animals such as tigers often need much larger connected landscapes to survive and establish territories.
The young tiger’s 400-km journey therefore offers a glimpse into a wider ecological story. As long as forests remain connected and prey and water are available, wildlife can continue to move through landscapes that appear fragmented on a human map.
For this tiger, the search for a permanent home may not yet be over. But its long journey shows that the forests of central Maharashtra still retain pathways that allow one of India’s most elusive big cats to keep moving.
