AT 29, Daphney Yawing is a proud Morobean woman, a wife, a mother of two sons, and now a graduate with a diploma in human resources management. But her journey to that stage on June 12, during the International Training Institute graduation, was built on sacrifice, resilience, and faith. “My roots are in two parts of Morobe,” Yawing said. “My mother’s home is Davong village in Buang local level government area, Bulolo, and my father’s home is Kemen village in Nabak, Nawaeb.” Yawing grew up in a polygamous household, where her father had two wives. Yawing’s mother, from Buang, is her foundation, and her father’s second wife is from Wabag and Sepik. “Growing up in a blended family had its challenges,” she said. “But it taught me love, acceptance, resilience, and the importance of family.” Her schooling began at Benong Elementary School, she then moved to Lanakapi Primary School, and later was selected to continue her education at Bumayong Lutheran Secondary School. After Grade 12, she was accepted into University of Technology (Unitech) for further studies. “It was excitement and hope,” she recalled. “But the K22,000 fee was far beyond what my mother could afford. “She was a hardworking housemaid who had already sacrificed so much.” Instead of giving up, Yawing found another path, when she enrolled at Bulolo Technical and Vocational Education Training (Tvet) Centre to study business, majoring in office administration. “Every setback was preparing me for something greater,” she said. After Tvet, in 2018, she did on-the-job training with Unitech’s Department of Open and Distance Learning. She then joined Homestate Corporation Limited as a receptionist and administrative officer in 2018. Through commitment, in 2020, she was promoted to human resources (HR) officer. “That’s where I found my passion – helping people get jobs and improve their lives,” Yawing said. “Seeing others succeed gave me purpose.” In 2023, she moved to Huon Logistics Limited as an accounts payable officer. Her HR dream did not fade, but as a determined and resilient young woman, with her employer’s support and the Morobe government’s Gerson Solulu Scholarship Scheme, she kept studying. “Life was not easy,” Yawing admitted. “I’d leave for work early, care for family at night, and study late while everyone slept. “There were times I felt tired and wanted to quit.” But she has set her mind to one day achieve her goals and dreams, and that kept her going, until June 12, she graduated with a diploma in human resources management. “That milestone is years of sacrifice and faith. But it’s not the end. “It’s only the beginning,” Yawing said. She credited her mother: “She never stopped believing in me. Everything I have is built on the foundation she laid.” Yawing also thanked her husband for his patience and support, her sons for being her motivation, mentor Angela Amene, Huon Logistics director Michael Beirne, and the Morobe scholarship programme. Her message to young Papua New Guineans is simple: “Never let your current situation determine your future. There will be obstacles. But your dreams are valid. “Work hard, stay focused, believe in yourself, and put God first. “If a village girl from Morobe, raised through hardship, can achieve this, then so can you. “Keep believing. “Your story is only beginning.”
