Wounded Marine receives mortgage-free smart home in Parrish PARRISH, Fla. (WWSB) - A wounded U.S. Marine and his mother are beginning a new chapter after receiving a mortgage-free, specially adapted smart home in Parrish. The Gary Sinise Foundation hosted a grand reveal Wednesday afternoon for U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal John “J.T.” Doody and his mother, Christina Ott. “This is absolutely incredible. This is beautiful,” Ott said as she toured the home for the first time. From the outside, the house may look like an ordinary home. Inside, however, every detail was designed to give Doody more independence and make daily life easier for his family. “It’s life-changing,” said Andy Jahnsen, assistant director of the foundation’s R.I.S.E. program. “This isn’t just a home. It’s a place where they can rest, where they can live independently, where they can do things much easier.” Doody’s journey to the new home began more than two decades ago. Inspired to serve after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 at 22 years old. He later deployed to Iraq and served on the front lines in Fallujah. In 2008, Doody was shot by a sniper. After surviving his combat wounds, he developed a bacterial infection that led to multiple strokes and left him in a coma for five months. When he woke up, he was living with a traumatic brain injury, quadriplegia and cognitive blindness. Venice woman becomes homeowner through Habitat for Humanity after battling cancer “Our lives took such a huge turnaround,” Ott said. From that point forward, she became her son’s full-time caregiver. The foundation’s R.I.S.E. program built the home with features specifically designed around Doody’s needs, including wider hallways, larger spaces for his wheelchair, voice-activated technology and other accessibility upgrades. “With his chair and the size of it, the wider hallways and the bigger areas to turn around are things that are extremely important to us at the foundation,” Jahnsen said. Ott said the home brings a sense of relief after years of challenges. “There are so many different emotions that I’m experiencing right now... happiness, joy, relief,” she said. Every room was designed with independence in mind. For Doody and his mother, the home represents more than a new place to live. It is a fresh start after years of sacrifice.
