7 wild end-of-summer outdoor adventures you can stream from the comfort of home From My Old Ass to Campfire Tales, these movies keep the season going on your screen Those of us living in Canada are lucky to be surrounded by its inviting and often intimidating natural beauty, from the emerald-green forests of British Columbia and the vast Prairies to the crashing waves of the Atlantic coast. Even so, the great outdoors can feel surprisingly far away when life keeps us inside. Thankfully, these seven movies let you stream a little outdoor adventure directly into your living room. The list of films below includes coming-of-age classics, cross-country soul searches, summer-camp manhunts, high-stakes environmental battles and crackling campfire anthologies. Consider it a way to give the more mature campers in your cabin something to chew on without the woods ever getting too dark to handle. My Old Ass (2024) — Prime Video Aubrey Plaza co-stars in Canadian filmmaker Megan Park’s second feature, a queer cottage-country comedy that made a major splash at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it was acquired by Amazon MGM for a reported $15 million US. While mind-altering drugs do play a pivotal role in the plot, this is still a pee-your-pants-funny delight appropriate for most of your cottage crew. My Old Ass follows Elliott (Maisy Stella) as she faces her last simple summer in Ontario’s Muskoka region before heading to the University of Toronto in the fall. During a psychedelic mushroom trip with her friends, Elliott comes face-to-face with her 39-year-old self, played by Plaza, who offers up some tips for her future, including a warning to avoid a cute local boy named Chad. Shot partially on location at Lake Joseph, this charming and inventive existential comedy takes boat rides, jumps off docks, and gets nice and cosy next to bonfires. Canadian pop fans will also definitely clock that bonkers Justin Bieber needle drop. Moonrise Kingdom (2012) — Crave Set in the summer of 1965, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom follows Sam (Jared Gilman), a precocious 12-year-old camper who invites fellow outsider Suzy (Kara Hayward) to leave their difficult realities behind and run away together into the wilds of a New England island. A star-studded supporting cast of bewildered adults, including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, organizes the search for the young pair, who have fled to a secret, beachy cove. Part of what makes Anderson’s 2012 classic so special is its fictional setting of New Penzance Island, which, under the filmmaker’s playful lens, becomes a vintage woodsy wonderland and an easy stand-in for somewhere along Canada’s Atlantic coast. According to the film’s deadpan narrator, played by veteran character actor Bob Balaban, New Penzance is “forested with old-growth pine and maple” and “criss-crossed by shallow tidal creeks.” “There are no paved roads,” he adds, but instead “many miles of intersecting footpaths and dirt trails.” Luckily, our heroes are armed with a record player, a cat and some covetable ’60s fashion. Wildhood (2021) — CBC Gem This cathartic outdoor coming-of-age odyssey from two-spirit L’nu filmmaker Bretten Hannam is about Link (Phillip Lewitski), a queer Mi’kmaw teen hitchhiking across Nova Scotia in search of his mother. Along the way, he’s joined by Pasmay (Joshua Odjick), a crush-worthy powwow dancer who helps him reconnect with his language, roots and the multitudes of his identity. A romance set against the majesty of Mi’kma’ki, Wildhood premiered at TIFF and went on to earn six Canadian Screen Award nominations, with Odjick winning for his supporting role. This critically acclaimed indie was shot on location in the Annapolis Valley, a breathtaking stretch along the Bay of Fundy. Hannam presents the film’s dramatic beaches and touching romance with an informed and stylish lens. As Link and Pasmay’s dynamic deepens, Nova Scotia’s landscapes become the perfect setting for self-discovery. Stand by Me (1986) — Starz (Crave add-on) A classic cinematic snapshot of boyhood, this essential late-summer staple from the late, great Rob Reiner was adapted from Stephen King’s novella The Body. While the film and its source material are tinged with danger and excitement, they’re also proof that there is much more to King than horror. This film follows four boys who spend Labour Day weekend in 1959 hiking along railway tracks in hopes of seeing a dead body with their very own eyes. It stars a young ensemble of famous faces, including Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O’Connell, who together capture an honest and unsanitized vision of childhood. The boys set out on an occasionally harrowing two-day journey that includes camping, a leech-filled swamp and a night under the stars. As they venture farther from the pressures and safety of home, they find it easier to speak openly about the growing pains of adolescence. All these decades later, Stand by Me remains one of cinema’s best and most thoughtful sunset views of childhood and summertime. Kayak to Klemtu (2017) — CBC Gem Kayak to Klemtu, a 2017 drama from Heiltsuk and Mohawk director Zoe Leigh Hopkins, follows 14-year-old Ella (Ta’Kaiya Blaney) on a mission to honour the memory of her late uncle. She takes his ashes on a roughly 500-kilometre kayak trip from Tla’Amin Nation on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast to the community of Klemtu on Swindle Island, intending to speak at a community hearing about a newly proposed pipeline. Ella is supported on her journey by her family, including her uncle Don, played by Corner Gas star Lorne Cardinal. The landscapes surrounding Great Bear Rainforest, home of the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation, are enough to make this an easy pick suitable for the whole family, but it’s the film’s pipeline story, inspired by the Northern Gateway proposal, that gives the story political urgency. This one is a reminder that our voices hold real power when we’re not afraid to speak up. One Week (2008) — Prime Video Written and directed by Michael McGowan, One Week is a challenging but rewarding jaunt across this vast and complicated country. Joshua Jackson plays Ben, a Toronto English teacher who receives the shocking diagnosis of stage-four cancer. But when a Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim cup tells him to “Go West Young Man,” he postpones treatment, buys a 1973 Norton Commando motorcycle and does exactly that, riding all the way from Toronto to Tofino, B.C. A lovely and lonesome portrait of the open road, Ben’s trip along the Trans-Canada Highway takes in some distinctly Canadian landmarks and landscapes, from Sudbury’s Big Nickel to the towering trees of British Columbia’s Cathedral Grove. The soundtrack also features some excellent locally sourced jams, including music by Stars, Joel Plaskett and Wintersleep. It’s not always an easy watch. The late Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip makes a notable cameo as a cancer survivor Ben encounters along his journey — a scene that’s bound to be bittersweet for Tragically Hip fans. Still, One Week is sure to offer the more mature members of your motor gang some honest lessons in mortality and self-reflection. Campfire Tales (1997) — Prime Video/Hoopla A largely overlooked gem of late-’90s, post-Scream horror, Campfire Tales follows a group of teens (James Marsden, Ron Livingston, Christine Taylor, Amy Smart and more) who become stranded after wrecking their car on a silent stretch of remote road in the middle of the night. With nowhere to go until help arrives, they build a fire and share classic urban legends about escaped killers with hooks, disturbing digital dangers and necklaces that should never, ever be taken off. Few movies capture the spooky, intimate tradition of telling scary stories around a campfire as well as this one does, with its crackling embers, pitch-black woods and series of memorable chapters. Directors Martin Kunert, David Semel and Matt Cooper channel the nighttime storytelling spirit of Are You Afraid of the Dark? but with an adult-centric edge. Long difficult to find on home video and streaming services, its digital arrival has finally made this just-cheesy-enough campfire classic easy to discover with your very own Midnight Society.
