Умная оптимизация, а не рост бюджета, станет ключом к устойчивости малого бизнеса в ЮАР

Why smarter IT, not bigger IT budgets, will define SMB resilience By David C. Howell, regional sales director at ManageEngine South Africa South African small and medium businesses (SMBs) operate in an increasingly complex digital environment where cloud adoption, digital platforms, and hybrid work have made technology central to serving customers, supporting employees, and managing operations. Yet many SMBs continue to face constrained budgets, limited IT resources, and growing expectations around security, reliability, and digital experiences. For these businesses, resilience does not necessarily come from investing in more technology. Instead, it increasingly depends on how effectively they use what they already have. A smarter approach to IT can help SMBs simplify technology environments, reduce manual work, and gain greater visibility into operations, enabling existing investments to deliver more value. Making existing investments work harder As businesses respond to new digital requirements, there is a natural tendency to add another tool. While each investment may address an individual need, the cumulative effect can be a fragmented IT environment that is costly and difficult to manage. Digital 2026: South Africa reports that 51.7 million people were using the internet in the country as of October 2025, equivalent to 79.6% of the population, underscoring the growing importance of reliable digital experiences for customers, employees, and businesses. Rather than investing in more technology, businesses should first assess whether existing systems are being used effectively and can work together more efficiently. A lean approach to IT can help here by removing unnecessary complexity while aligning technology with business priorities. For SMBs with small IT teams, the goal is not the largest technology stack but one that is manageable, efficient, and able to scale with the business. Automation can turn limited resources into greater capacity One of the most practical ways for SMBs to achieve smarter IT is through automation. IT teams spend a considerable amount of time on repetitive activities such as service requests, software updates, monitoring, and reporting. Automating these processes can reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and free up valuable capacity. Automation delivers the greatest value in a connected IT environment where applications and systems share information, streamline workflows, and reduce manual effort. This enables IT professionals to focus on higher-value priorities such as strengthening security, improving employee experiences, supporting innovation, and aligning technology with wider business objectives. For resource-constrained SMBs, the real value of automation is the capacity it creates. Better visibility enables better decisions Businesses also need visibility into their technology environment, including devices, applications, users, performance, and potential risks. When information is spread across disconnected systems, IT teams have to spend valuable time bringing data together before they can identify and address an issue. This challenge is particularly pressing for South African SMBs, which are increasingly reliant on digital technologies while often operating with limited financial, technical, and human resources to address growing cybersecurity risks, according to a 2025 study published in the African Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. A more connected environment can provide a clearer view of the technology landscape, helping IT teams identify potential problems earlier, understand system performance, and make better decisions about where resources should be directed. This visibility is particularly important as cybersecurity becomes increasingly intertwined with everyday IT management. Understanding which devices and applications are in use, whether systems are up to date, and where potential vulnerabilities exist can help SMBs take a more proactive approach to security rather than waiting for an outage, vulnerability, or disruption to demand attention. Resilience comes from continuous optimisation For SMBs, digital resilience is ultimately less about the size of the technology budget and more about the effectiveness of the operating model behind it. Simplifying technology, connecting systems, automating repetitive processes, and improving visibility can help smaller IT teams achieve more without continuously expanding their technology footprint. New technology still has an important role to play, but it should strengthen existing environments rather than add unnecessary complexity. As South African SMBs continue to digitally evolve, the businesses that will thrive will not necessarily be those with the biggest IT budgets. They will be those that use their existing investments effectively and continuously optimise how their IT environments operate. Smarter IT is therefore not simply a cost-management strategy but a foundation for resilience, agility, and sustainable growth.
