Аналитики считают, что Китай откладывает экспорт истребителя J-35 в Пакистан до появления у Индии аналогичного самолета

The continuing debate over Pakistan’s potential acquisition of the Chinese J-35 stealth fighter has increasingly shifted from whether the aircraft will eventually be exported to when Beijing would consider such a transfer strategically appropriate. Assessments by some strategic analysts, including Yang Xiaotong in commentary published by The Diplomat, suggest that China’s hesitation may not be driven solely by production schedules or technology protection, but also by concerns over preserving strategic stability in South Asia. While Chinese officials have not publicly stated that they are delaying exports for this reason, analysts have argued that Beijing has strong incentives to avoid introducing a major qualitative military imbalance that could alter the regional security calculus. Avoiding Strategic Overconfidence One concern discussed by analysts is the possibility that introducing a fifth-generation stealth fighter into South Asia before India fields a comparable capability could significantly alter military perceptions. Stealth aircraft are not simply another incremental fighter upgrade. Their low-observable characteristics, advanced sensors, data fusion and network-centric capabilities can provide substantial operational advantages, particularly during the opening stages of a conflict. Analysts argue that if one side were to perceive itself as possessing a decisive technological edge, there is a theoretical risk that decision-makers could become more willing to accept military risks than they otherwise would. Such assessments are rooted in broader deterrence theory rather than any certainty about future political decisions. In this analytical framework, Beijing’s objective would be to avoid creating conditions in which a perceived technological advantage contributes to greater instability during future crises. Preventing Unwanted Strategic Entanglement Another factor highlighted by commentators is China’s broader geopolitical agenda. China’s principal long-term strategic competition remains focused on the Western Pacific and its relationship with the United States. A major India-Pakistan conflict would consume diplomatic attention, create economic uncertainty and potentially complicate Beijing’s wider regional priorities. Although China maintains a close strategic partnership with Pakistan, analysts note that Beijing has historically sought to avoid becoming directly involved in India-Pakistan military confrontations. From this perspective, maintaining stability in South Asia serves China’s broader national interests. If the introduction of advanced stealth fighters were perceived as increasing the likelihood of miscalculation during a regional crisis, analysts argue that Beijing would have incentives to adopt a more cautious export timeline. Maintaining a Stable Deterrence Balance Many strategic observers argue that Chinese defence policy generally seeks to maintain a predictable regional balance rather than create overwhelming military superiority for one partner. Within this interpretation, exporting the J-35 after India fields its own fifth-generation capability—whether through the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme or another future platform—would preserve relative parity while reducing the risk that either side perceives a temporary window of overwhelming advantage. Such sequencing would align with a broader deterrence principle in which both countries possess comparable advanced capabilities, thereby reducing incentives for preventive or opportunistic military action. Some analysts therefore suggest that China may view a reactive export posture as strategically preferable to an early transfer that could unintentionally reshape the regional balance. Technology Protection Also Matters Strategic stability is only one element discussed by analysts. The J-35 represents one of China’s most advanced aerospace programmes, incorporating stealth shaping, sophisticated avionics, advanced sensors and highly sensitive mission systems. Exporting such technology involves extensive considerations regarding technology security, operational secrecy and long-term sustainment. These factors alone could influence export timing regardless of regional military dynamics. An Analytical Perspective, Not an Official Policy It is important to distinguish between analytical assessments and confirmed Chinese government policy. China has not publicly declared that it intends to delay J-35 exports until India inducts a fifth-generation fighter. The arguments described above originate from strategic commentary and expert analysis that attempt to explain Beijing’s possible decision-making rather than statements of official policy. Other factors—including production capacity, People’s Liberation Army Air Force requirements, export readiness, pricing, industrial priorities and future geopolitical developments—could also shape any eventual transfer decision.
