Канада призвана к бдительности: нация стоит на перепутье глобальных изменений

A Wake-Up Call for a Nation at a Turning Point There are moments in the life of a nation when events unfolding before us demand more than political commentary. They demand reflection. Canada may be approaching such a moment. What initially appears to be another trade dispute, another round of tariffs, or another disagreement between governments may, in fact, be part of something much larger. The deeper issue is not simply the price of goods crossing a border. It is the changing nature of power, diplomacy, economic dependence, and international leadership. And Canadians should be paying attention. The question before us is no longer simply, What happened? It is: Where are we going from here? Have We Forgotten What History Taught Us? For those of us who grew up hearing the stories of parents and grandparents who lived through the Second World War, history is not ancient. It is personal. Less than eighty years ago, much of the world was rebuilding itself from unimaginable destruction. Millions had experienced war, displacement, hunger, persecution, and loss. Entire cities had been destroyed. Families had been separated. A generation had learned, at extraordinary human cost, what happens when political ambition, nationalism, economic desperation, and the abuse of power overwhelm reason. The promise after that devastation was supposed to be different. The world would build stronger institutions. Nations would learn to negotiate. Trade would create interdependence. Democracy would provide peaceful mechanisms for resolving disputes. Yet here we are again. We live in the most technologically advanced period in human history. We have extraordinary scientific knowledge, unprecedented communication, immense economic capacity, and the ability to connect billions of people instantly. And yet, politically and socially, we sometimes appear to be moving backward. That should concern every citizen. What Brought Us Here? We need the courage to ask uncomfortable questions. What brought us to this point? Have we become too economically dependent on a small number of markets? Have we mistaken stability for permanence? Have governments underestimated the speed at which the international order can change? Have political leaders become too focused on the next election and not focused enough on the next generation? And perhaps the most important question: Do we have the leadership necessary to understand the reality we are entering? These are not partisan questions. They are Canadian questions. Power Must Always Be Watched History offers another important warning. Societies become vulnerable when power becomes concentrated and accountability becomes weak. The danger begins when leaders or institutions stop seeing disagreement as legitimate and begin treating it as disobedience. When demands are not met, the temptation can be to escalate to intimidate, retaliate, discriminate, exclude, or abuse. History has recorded this pattern repeatedly. As an African, I have seen this lesson reflected in the history of my own continent. Powerful kingdoms and societies were weakened or destroyed through conflict, exploitation, the slave trade, colonialism, and later struggles over power and independence. The details of history differ from one place to another, but the underlying lesson is universal: When power is left without sufficient restraint, ordinary people eventually pay the price. There is an old saying among elders in my community: When you have been bitten by a snake, even a worm can make you cautious. That is not a call for fear. It is a call for vigilance. Canada should not be frightened by the world. But Canada should be awake to it. Canada Has Been Here Before Canada has historically been fortunate to have leaders who understood that governing a country is fundamentally an exercise in responsibility. From John Diefenbaker and Brian Mulroney to Joe Clark, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin, Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau, and now Mark Carney, Canadians have witnessed different political philosophies, different personalities, and different visions for the country. But beyond political differences, there has always been a fundamental responsibility attached to high office: Serve the country. Protect its institutions. Defend its interests. Preserve its democratic character. Leave the nation stronger for those who come next. That principle must remain larger than any individual leader or political party. Because Canada is bigger than its governments. It is bigger than its elections. And it is certainly bigger than any temporary political disagreement. Trade Is No Longer Just About Trade For generations, Canadians have understood trade as an economic relationship. But in today’s world, trade is also power. Supply chains are power. Energy is power. Technology is power. Critical minerals are power. Food security is power. Financial systems are power. And economic dependence can become geopolitical vulnerability. The era in which Canada could simply assume that our closest trading relationships would always remain predictable may be ending. That does not mean Canada should turn inward. Quite the opposite. We should become more globally engaged but also more resilient. We must diversify our markets, strengthen domestic production, invest in infrastructure and innovation, support Canadian workers and businesses, and build relationships with trusted partners around the world. Most importantly, we must understand that economic security is now part of national security. Are Our Governments Ready? The federal government cannot do this alone. The backbone of Canada is not only Ottawa. It is also our provinces and territories, municipalities, Indigenous governments, businesses, universities, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, community organizations, and ordinary citizens. If international instability produces economic disruption, the effects will eventually reach local communities. They will appear in household budgets. They will affect businesses. They will influence employment. They will test public services. They will challenge provincial and municipal governments. That means leadership cannot exist only at the national level. Every level of government must be competent, prepared, transparent, and capable of working together. Canada cannot afford fragmented leadership at a time when the challenges themselves are becoming more interconnected. The Election Will Not Be the Whole Story The political consequences will inevitably be significant. The next elections will be influenced by economic anxiety, affordability, employment, national security, immigration, trade, housing, and confidence in government. But Canadians should be careful. We should not allow every national challenge to become merely another weapon in partisan politics. Governments should be held accountable. Opposition parties should challenge them. Journalists should investigate. Citizens should question. That is democracy. But democracy also requires maturity. We must distinguish between legitimate political disagreement and the deliberate weakening of public trust. The country needs debate. It does not need permanent division. What Is the Long-Term Objective? Perhaps the most difficult question is also the one we cannot yet answer with certainty: What exactly is unfolding, and where does it lead? We should be careful not to assume motives we cannot prove. But we should be equally careful not to dismiss warning signs simply because they are uncomfortable. The world is changing. Economic power is shifting. Traditional alliances are being tested. Technology is transforming economies and warfare. Political institutions are under pressure. And the concentration of wealth and influence has reached levels previous generations could hardly have imagined. Canada must therefore think beyond the next tariff, the next negotiation, or the next election. We need a long-term national strategy. The Canada We Leave Behind Every generation eventually receives the same question: What did you do with the country you inherited? We cannot afford to be the generation that assumed Canada’s stability was guaranteed. It is not. Democracy is not self-sustaining. Prosperity is not permanent. Peace is not automatic. Good governance cannot be taken for granted. And national sovereignty is not protected merely by words. It is protected by competent institutions, responsible leadership, economic resilience, informed citizens, and the willingness to stand firm when necessary while remaining committed to peaceful solutions. Canada must stand on guard not with fear, but with wisdom. Not with hostility, but with confidence. Not by retreating from the world, but by becoming stronger within it. Where Do We Go From Here? That is the question of our time. We can respond with anger or with intelligence. We can retreat into division or strengthen our common purpose. We can allow uncertainty to paralyze us or use this moment to rebuild Canada’s economic resilience, democratic confidence, and international position. The choice is ours. History will judge not only the leaders who occupied high office during this period. It will judge all of us. Because nations do not lose their direction in a single day. They lose it gradually when citizens stop paying attention, institutions become complacent, leadership becomes short-sighted, and warnings are dismissed until the consequences become impossible to ignore. Canada has been fortunate. We have inherited a country built by generations who understood sacrifice, compromise, courage, and responsibility. Now it is our turn. Let us not waste that inheritance. Let us remain peaceful, creative, vigilant, and hopeful. Let us defend Canada’s interests without losing Canada’s character. Let us disagree without becoming enemies. And let us ensure that when future generations ask what Canada did at this turning point, the answer will be simple: We were awake. We were prepared. And we chose wisely.
