There's a particular thrill in watching a serial killer (movies and web series) story unfold, especially when you have no idea where it’s headed. A seemingly simple murder can lead to a much bigger mystery, with clever detectives, disturbing motives and plenty of twists along the way. These movies and web series bring plenty of darkness, suspense and edge-of-your-seat moments to your screen. What to watch: 7 spine-chilling serial killer movies and web series that will keep you hooked 1. The Silence of the Lambs – Amazon Prime Video FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is assigned to track down a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). To understand his mind, she turns to imprisoned psychiatrist and cannibalistic murderer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Their conversations become a tense game of manipulation, with Lecter offering cryptic clues about Buffalo Bill while probing Clarice about her own past. As the case gathers momentum, Clarice pieces together Lecter’s clues and races to find Buffalo Bill, who is holding the daughter of a US senator captive. 2. Sangharsh – YouTube Trainee CBI officer Reet Oberoi (Preity Zinta) is assigned to investigate a disturbing series of child abductions and murders. Her search leads her to Lajja Shankar Pandey (Ashutosh Rana), a religious fanatic who believes that sacrificing children will help him attain immortality. To get inside Pandey’s mind, Reet seeks the help of Professor Aman Verma (Akshay Kumar), an exceptionally intelligent prisoner who has been wrongly implicated in a crime. Aman helps her understand the clues and narrow down Pandey’s whereabouts. Things become even more urgent when Pandey abducts the Home Minister’s child, leaving Reet and Aman with little time to stop his next sacrifice. 3. Longlegs – Amazon Prime Video Longlegs is an atmospheric supernatural horror thriller that combines police procedural elements with occult dread. Set in the 1990s, the film follows rookie FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), who is assigned to an unsolved case involving a string of murder-suicides across Oregon. The killings span decades, with each crime scene pointing back to an elusive serial killer known as Longlegs (Nicolas Cage). As Lee follows the trail, she notices a disturbing pattern connecting the victims and begins to uncover links to her own past. The deeper she gets into the case, the harder it becomes to separate the clues from the nightmare surrounding them. 4. Dahaad – Amazon Prime Video In a small town in rural Rajasthan, Sub-Inspector Anandi Bhaati ( Sonakshi Sinha ) investigates what initially looks like a routine missing-persons case. When one of the missing women is found dead in a public restroom, Anandi notices a disturbing pattern. More than 27 young women have disappeared across the region under similar circumstances, with their bodies later found in public toilets and their jewellery missing. Unlike most whodunits, we know early on that the culprit is Anand Swarnakar ( Vijay Varma ), a mild-mannered, respected college lecturer and family man. The series builds tension around Anandi’s efforts to expose him as he uses his ordinary image and careful planning to stay ahead of the police. 5. Sector 36 – Netflix The movie follows Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal), who is investigating the disappearance of children from a slum settlement in Noida. The case takes a disturbing turn when the evidence points towards Prem Singh (Vikrant Massey), a mild-mannered house help employed by wealthy businessman Balbir Singh Bassi (Akash Khurana). As Pandey digs deeper, he finds evidence of a horrifying pattern of abductions and murders and begins to question how the crimes went unchecked for so long. The story also brings class inequality and police negligence into focus, showing how the killer was able to operate without attracting enough attention. Inspired by the Nithari killings, the film is as much about institutional failure as it is about the crimes themselves. 6. The Sinner – Netflix This anthology crime series follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), who takes on cases involving ordinary people responsible for shocking acts of violence. Each season starts with a seemingly inexplicable crime and gradually digs into the events, secrets and trauma behind it. In the first season, Ambrose investigates Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), a woman who suddenly kills a man in public but has no idea what drove her to do it. As he delves into her past, buried memories begin to surface and offer a very different picture of what happened. Rather than simply asking who committed the crime, the series focuses on the more complicated question of why. 7. Ratsasan – JioHotstar Arun Kumar (Vishnu Vishal), a police officer who once dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, finds himself investigating a string of murders involving schoolgirls. The victims are killed in similar ways, leading Arun to suspect that a serial predator is behind the crimes. He begins studying the victims, following leads and trying to understand what connects them, eventually narrowing his search to a disturbing suspect. With another girl potentially in danger, Arun has to put the pieces together before the killer gets another chance to strike. The Tamil thriller keeps the suspense high with its grim subject matter, creepy atmosphere and cat-and-mouse chase.
