What does R5 000 buy in Botswana compared with South Africa? We compare current grocery prices for maize meal, rice, milk, and more. Published Sep 6, 2026 in Lifestyle With grocery prices continuing to squeeze household budgets, shoppers are increasingly looking for ways to make their money stretch further. In South Africa, the average household food basket tracked by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group has remained above R5 000, highlighting the pressure facing consumers. But what happens when you take the same R5 000 across the border to Botswana? We compared the prices of nine everyday grocery items in Botswana and South Africa to see how far the money goes. For the Botswana comparison, we used a SPAR promotion running until 6 September 2026, while South African prices were taken from Shoprite promotions and current price listings available during the same period. Botswana prices were converted into rand using an exchange rate of P1 = R1.192619 on 5 September 2026. What groceries cost in Botswana vs South Africa Grocery item | Botswana | Botswana in rands | South Africa 10kg maize meal | P62.99 | R75.14 | R69.99 10kg rice | P119.99 | R143.11 | R129.99 2L cooking oil | P59.99 | R71.53 | R69.99 6 x 1L long-life milk | P131.99 | R157.37 | R99.99 5kg flour | P61.99 | R73.92 | R79.99 2kg chicken portions | P72.99 | R87.05 | R99.98* 500g pasta | P13.99 | R16.68 | R19.99 5kg brown sugar | P78.99 | R94.21 | R112.48 400g pilchards | P30.99 | R36.95 | R22.99 South Africa’s chicken figure is based on a whole-chicken price of R49.99 per kilogram rather than an identical 2kg frozen-portions pack, so it should be treated as an indicative comparison. The Botswana SPAR promotion lists 10kg Chobe Super Special maize meal at P62.99, 10kg Spekko rice at P119.99, 2L SPAR sunflower oil at P59.99, six litres of long-life milk at P131.99, 5kg SPAR white bread flour at P61.99 and 2kg frozen chicken portions at P72.99. It also lists Fatti’s & Moni’s 500g pasta at P13.99, 5kg sugar at P78.99 and 400g Lucky Star pilchards at P30.99. The promotion was valid through 6 September 2026 at selected SPAR stores. In South Africa, Shoprite’s promotions for the period included Ritebrand 10kg maize meal at R69.99 and Spekko 10kg rice at R129.99. The same Shoprite promotions also listed Excella 2L sunflower oil at R69.99. Shoprite’s current price listings also show Fatti’s & Moni’s 500g pasta at R19.99, while a 2kg pack of Selati Golden Brown Sugar was advertised at R44.99 and 400g Ritebrand pilchards at R22.99. Botswana is not cheaper across the board The comparison produces an interesting result. Botswana comes out cheaper on flour, chicken, pasta and sugar among the selected products. For example, 5kg of SPAR white bread flour costs P61.99, equivalent to about R73.92. A comparable 5kg bag of Sasko cake wheat flour at Shoprite is listed at R79.99. The difference is even more noticeable for sugar. The Botswana SPAR promotion lists 5kg of refined white or brown sugar at P78.99, or about R94.21. In South Africa, Shoprite’s 2kg Selati Golden Brown Sugar is R44.99, meaning 5kg at that rate would cost approximately R112.48. Pasta is another area where Botswana has an advantage. A 500g pack of Fatti’s & Moni’s costs P13.99 in the Botswana promotion, compared with R19.99 for the same size in South Africa. South Africa wins on some staples The picture changes when looking at some of the biggest grocery staples. A 10kg bag of maize meal costs P62.99 in Botswana, equivalent to approximately R75.14. The Shoprite promotion has Ritebrand 10kg maize meal at R69.99, giving South African shoppers a saving of about R5 compared with the converted Botswana price. Rice also favours South Africa in this comparison. The Botswana SPAR promotion lists 10kg of Spekko rice at P119.99, or about R143.11. The equivalent 10kg Spekko promotion at Shoprite is R129.99. Cooking oil is almost evenly matched. Botswana’s 2L SPAR sunflower oil works out at approximately R71.53, compared with R69.99 for 2L Excella sunflower oil at Shoprite. The biggest difference in the selected basket is milk. Six litres of SPAR long-life full-cream milk costs P131.99, equivalent to about R157.37. A current Shoprite listing for six 1L cartons of Crystal Valley UHT full-cream long-life milk shows R99.99, making South Africa considerably cheaper on this product. So where does R5 000 go further? Adding the nine selected products gives a Botswana total of P633.91. At the exchange rate used in this comparison, that works out to approximately R756.01. The equivalent South African basket comes to approximately R637.90. That means the selected basket is about R118 more expensive in Botswana after converting the prices into rand. Put another way, if a shopper repeatedly bought this particular nine-item basket, R5 000 would cover about six full baskets in Botswana, with money left over, compared with about seven baskets in South Africa. But this is not evidence that South Africa is universally cheaper. The comparison is based on a limited selection of products and advertised specials. Prices vary between supermarkets, stores, regions and promotions. Prices are based on advertised promotions and current price listings available around 5–6 September 2026. Botswana prices were converted to rand at P1 = R1.192619. Prices may vary by store, location, availability and loyalty-card requirements.
