Институт Вебба вошел в топ-14% вузов США по версии The Princeton Review

Webb Institute, a highly selective engineering college in Glen Cove, has been named among the top 14% of U.S. colleges by the Princeton Review’s 2027 Edition.  The institute was ranked alongside 391 other schools across the country and is known as one of the oldest for naval architecture and marine engineering. Founded by William H. Webb in 1889, the institution was originally created as a place for shipbuilders to retire and to educate the next generation of ship builders tuition-free, according to Kaye Lin, director of Communications and Marketing at Webb.  Webb comes from a long line of shipbuilders and was among the premier shipbuilders in the 1800s, Lin said. She said the academy’s first home was in the Bronx, where the school and the shipbuilders’ residence shared one building. The institute moved to Glen Cove in 1947, purchasing the mansion the former Pratt family estate once owned. Every admitted student receives a full-tuition scholarship, funded by Webb’s original endowment and sustained by donors and alumni giving, which is available to United States citizens or permanent residents, Lin said.  She said every student who graduates from Webb receives the same bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering, and that because of the institute’s extremely small student body of about 105 students, each class year has around 26 students.  She said that about eight years ago, the institute had an endowment of nearly $700,000 per student and that this year it has risen to about $900,000.  While the institute does not offer a master’s degree, many students go on to continue their studies at institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and the University of Michigan.  “Many get jobs even before they graduate, and there’s a full tuition scholarship, which means that they leave without debt,” Lin said. “So it drives their career choices, and they really do feel as if the world is their oyster.” Lin said Webb’s unique opportunities include its Monday Lecture Series, which brings industry leaders to the Glen Cove campus, as well as its Winter Work Term, a paid industry internship completed during winter break each year. Richard Harris, who is a professor of humanities at Webb and serves as the institute’s assistant dean as well as director of Humanities, said students must take one humanities course during each semester, which he said helps to further the careers of Webb’s students as part of broadening their worldviews. He said that in employer surveys of juniors and seniors who completed the Winter Work Term, he found that nearly 97% had either good or excellent communication skills, in part because of their humanities learning. “We are delighted to recommend Webb Institute to prospective students and families looking for standout academics, dedicated faculty, and transformative career preparation,” Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review, said.
