Лучшие военные мини-сериалы: от классики 1979 года до современных драм за пять серий

I love a sprawling war epic as much as anyone, but I keep coming back to war miniseries. If you give me five episodes or fewer, I'm likely to clear my weekend and press play. Thankfully, plenty of great war miniseries tell their stories without dragging them out. Some focus on famous battles and major historical events, while others follow ordinary people caught in the middle. A few are sweeping and emotional, while others are tense political dramas about choices and consequences. What surprised me while putting this list together was how far back the format stretches. We tend to think of war miniseries as a 2010s trend, but the BBC made sharp, angry, and beautifully acted war dramas back in 1979. Those shows hold up extremely well when we compare them to anything made today. The shows I picked for this list span several decades, from a black-and-white 1979 adaptation to a colorized 2014 documentary, and every title on it clocks in at five episodes or fewer. Why You Should Trust Me: I've been writing about movies and TV shows for MovieWeb for almost four years now. I've always been drawn to war stories because they make history feel personal. I'm also a big fan of miniseries because I don't have to spend hours waiting for a show to get where it's going. Honorable Mentions Our World War (2014): BBC Three's anthology take on WWI drops you into a different battle each episode. It was shot with a helmet-cam intensity, which makes it feel more like modern combat footage and less like a period piece. At just three episodes, it is short, intense, and much more immediate than you'd expect. The Great War: The People's Story (2014): If you want something more documentary-focused, The Great War: The People's Story is worth checking out. It uses the personal stories of people who lived through World War I. Olivia Colman narrates, and Claire Foy, Brian Cox, and James Norton play historical figures. '37 Days' (2014) – 3 Episodes The Tense Countdown to War, Told in Cabinet Rooms Most war dramas drop you straight into the trenches, but 37 Days does the opposite. Its entire three-episode runtime is focused on the diplomatic scramble between the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Britain's declaration of war, and it never once shows you a battlefield. Ian McDiarmid plays Foreign Secretary Edward Grey as a man watching Europe talk itself into catastrophe. I really like this approach because the series feels like a political thriller, and the tension comes from knowing exactly how this ends while the characters on screen are still convinced it can be avoided. Watch This If: You want to understand the politics behind the war, not just the fighting. Skip This If: You came here for combat. This one doesn't have any battle scenes. 'Apocalypse: World War I' (2014) – 5 Episodes World War I Like You've Never Seen It If you've ever watched old black-and-white footage of World War I and wondered what it actually looked like, Apocalypse: World War I is worth your time. The French documentary miniseries uses archival footage that has been restored, colorized, and edited into a five-part account of the conflict. It covers the Ottoman front, the Eastern Front, and the fighting across Germany's African colonies, not just the trenches of France and Belgium that dominate every other adaptation on this list. It also doesn't spend too much time on famous battles; instead, you get a sense of what the war did to ordinary people, which makes the scale of the conflict easier to understand. Watch This If: You want the scope of the war beyond the Western Front. Skip This If: You need characters and dialogue to be historically accurate. 'The Monocled Mutineer' (1986) – 4 Episodes A True Story the BBC Got in Trouble For Telling In The Monocled Mutineer, a young Paul McGann plays Percy Toplis, the soldier accused of leading the 1917 Étaples mutiny before going on the run disguised as a British officer. Thanks to Alan Bleasdale's script, the storytelling is so intense and gripping that it feels less like a trench drama and more like a fugitive thriller with a grudge against the military establishment. The series caused a real political firestorm when it aired. Accusations that the BBC was biased against the Conservative government eventually contributed to the resignation of the corporation's Director-General. However, four decades later, McGann's performance is the reason why people remember it. Watch This If: You've watched classic war movies or TV shows and want something stranger, darker, and more character-driven. Skip This If: You want your WWI drama to stay focused on the front line, not the fallout at home. 'Birdsong' (2012) – 2 Episodes A Powerful Story Told in Just Two Episodes If you only have one weekend to spare, Birdsong is probably the best recommendation on this list. You can finish this adaptation of Sebastian Faulks's novel in one sitting. Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Wraysford, a young British soldier whose memories of a love affair with Isabelle Azaire, played by Clémence Poésy, follow him into the trenches of World War I. The story cuts between the pre-war affair in France, the trenches at the Somme years later, and the underground tunneling sequences, where soldiers dig beneath enemy lines in near-total darkness. Matthew Goode, Richard Madden, George MacKay, and Joseph Mawle breathe life into equally important roles. Watch This If: You want maximum impact for minimum time. While these two episodes are long, they don't feel padded. Skip This If: You don't like a narrative structure that includes flashbacks. While that can work in a long-running series, it can feel choppy when there are only two episodes. 'Testament of Youth' (1979) – 5 Episodes The Original Vera Brittain Adaptation Testament of Youth takes a more personal approach to World War I by telling the story through Vera Brittain, based on her famous memoir. Cheryl Campbell plays Vera, a young woman who dreams of attending Oxford before the war changes everything. She leaves university to become a volunteer nurse as the men around her head off to fight. The series is incredible because it doesn't treat war as something happening far away. Vera is directly affected by it, and the losses keep piling up as the years pass. Since the five episodes follow her from 1913 through 1918, you see how much she changes along the way. Watch This If: You want the strongest emotional gut-punch on this entire list. Also, the focus stays on Vera and the people around her, so you won't feel distracted. Skip This If: You need modern production polish. This one has a distinct late-'70s look and pace. 'The Passing Bells' (2014) – 5 Episodes Two Young Soldiers on Opposite Sides The Passing Bells follows a simple idea: watch two teenagers who are excited about going to war, and then show them what happens when that excitement disappears. Patrick Gibson plays Thomas, a young British soldier, and Jack Lowden plays Michael, a German teenager. They enlist believing the war will be over quickly, only to discover how brutal it really is. These five episodes follow them through the conflict from 1914 to 1918. I like that the series gives them both equal attention. You're not simply watching one side fight the other, but two men who have more in common than they realize. Watch This If: You want a short World War I drama that gets straight to the human side of the conflict. The episodes are also only around half an hour each, which makes it easy to binge. Skip This If: You're expecting a massive scope. The Passing Bells isn't trying to compete with the huge scale of a show like HBO's Band of Brothers. It works because it keeps things personal. 'Parade's End' (2012) – 5 Episodes A Brilliant Period Drama Set Against the War Parade's End is a little different from every other war miniseries that I included in this list. The five-part BBC drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rebecca Hall, and Adelaide Clemens in a complicated story about love, class, marriage, and changing social values as World War I approaches and eventually consumes Europe. Tom Stoppard wrote the series, which is an adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's novels. Cumberbatch plays Christopher Tietjens, a traditional Englishman whose life becomes complicated as his unhappy marriage and relationship with Valentine Wannop collide. Then war alters his reality. Parade's End isn't about battles. It's about what war does to everyone who has to come back from it. Watch This If: I recommend this one if you want something a little more sophisticated and character-driven. Skip This If: You want the war itself front and center, not a marriage falling apart around it.
