The Virgin Valley Artists Association is highlighting the work and background of Robert Dykes, an artist whose creative journey spans more than half a century and is intertwined with his time at sea. Dykes, who retired from the Navy in 1990 and subsequently worked as an engineering consultant until 2002, has been drawing and painting for over 50 years. His naval career directly influenced his artistic evolution. While he initially worked with oil paints, the realities of spending extensive periods at sea required a more practical approach. Explaining his shift in technique, Dykes noted that finding time to draw during off-duty hours required a simpler medium, leading him to switch to pencil and pen and ink. In the late 1980s, Dykes discovered watercolor, which quickly became his primary medium. However, he remains versatile, occasionally returning to monochromatic styles when he feels a subject calls for it. As Dykes has participated in numerous juried shows, his work is held in private collections, and he holds the title of designated Coast Guard Artist, with several of his pieces featured in their permanent collection. For those admiring his work, a curious detail often stands out: the signature “Bodykes.” The origin of this unique moniker dates back to 1970, during his service with the Air Antisubmarine Squadron Thirty (VS-30). Recalling the origin, Dykes shared that there were several Bobs in the squadron, and when the coffee mess treasurer asked what name he wanted on his coffee cup, he requested Bob Dykes. When the cup returned, it bore the name “Bodykes” because the cup allowed a maximum of seven letters. From that moment on, he became “Bo” to his squadron mates, adding that he liked the name so much he has signed his artwork that way ever since.
