Vermont Country Store marks 80th anniversary with community celebration WESTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The Vermont Country Store is marking its 80th year, looking back at its roots while looking ahead to the future of the community it calls home. The store is not only a shopping staple for locals in Weston but a road trip destination in rural Vermont. “We’ve been around 80 years. And it’s still family-owned and operated. We’re true to our roots,” said Sheena Smith of the Vermont Country Store. Those roots stretch back to 1946, when Forrest and Mildred Orton opened the store in Weston after first starting with a small catalog. Eight decades later, that catalog reaches across the country while the storefront remains a destination for locals, visitors and generations of families. Richard Steiner and his wife have been making the trip to the store for about 30 years, first bringing their children and then their grandchildren. This visit, they were shopping for great-grandchildren. “I had to get my creemee-filled maple cookies because that’s my very favorite. And your maple ice cream,” Steiner said. Maple Creemee Passport, Weston Village Fair The Vermont Country Store is now a Maple Creemee Passport destination, which Smith said is helping expand the customer base. “We’ve seen quite a few Creemee Passport holders. And some say we might have the best maple creemee,” Smith said. The store is also helping organize the inaugural Weston Village Fair and Jubilee this September, a celebration shared by local organizations marking their own milestones. “Our community is small but mighty,” Smith said. The Sept. 12 celebration will include a parade, games, wagon rides, and other activities. Copyright 2026 WCAX. All rights reserved.
