Former Montreal mayor Valérie Plante embarking on new university role Plante, who served as Montreal’s mayor for 8 years, is starting a new position at Université de Montréal Valérie Plante has a new job. Montreal's former mayor is joining Université de Montréal (UdeM), where she will lecture and mentor in the Faculty of Arts and Science’s Maison des affaires publiques et internationales. Plante, who is a UdeM graduate, said she's pleased to return to the institute that lay the foundation for her political career. "My studies here played an important role in shaping my view of the world and developing my critical and political thinking," Plante said in a release announcing her new role. "This mandate will give me an opportunity to draw on my experience managing a major institution to better align research with the development of concrete and effective public policies." As part of her mandate, Plante will be responsible for creating a series of lectures and public events focused on issued like the state of democracy, citizen participation and the fight against climate change. She will also mentor graduate students and contribute to several faculty courses. Plante finished her undergraduate studies in anthropology and holds a master’s degree in museology from UdeM’s Faculty of Arts and Science. She also has a certificate in intervention in multiethnic settings from the Faculty of Continuing Education. Frédéric Bouchard, the faculty's dean, said Plante's political experience will be central to what she'll be able to share with the school's community. "I am delighted that she accepted our invitation." Plante announced in Oct. 2024 that she wouldn't be seeking a third term in office. She served as Montreal's mayor from 2018 to 2025. Her tenure is largely remembered for her decisions to prioritize expansions to public transit, making some streets pedestrian-only, building more cycling infrastructure and investments in social housing — goals she characterized as "making the city greener, safer and more resilient." Since leaving office, Plante has also written a novel, Grenades, which is scheduled to be released this month. She previously published a graphic novel detailing her political journey.
