В Австралии прощаются с выдающимся светодизайнером Рэйчел Берк

Australian theatre is mourning the loss of acclaimed lighting designer Rachel Burke (1967-2026), who died in late July aged 59. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Burke developed an extensive and critically acclaimed body of work across Australia’s leading arts companies, winning various awards for her work in theatre and architectural lighting, bringing a distinctive dramaturgical approach to the way light could shape space, atmosphere and story. A gathering to celebrate Burke’s life and her body of work will be held at 6pm on 15 September at Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne’s Southbank. The event will feature various speakers from across several fields who collaborated with Burke throughout her prolific career. Those planning to attend have been asked to RSVP. Vale Rachel Burke – quick links Theatre community honours Rachel Burke For the many artists who worked with her, Burke’s legacy extended beyond the designs she left behind. The news of her passing was met with an outpouring of love and grief from across the sector. Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre honoured Burke as ‘one of the greatest theatre artists of our time’. The company also remembered her as an artist whose generosity was inseparable from her creative practice. ‘Beyond her extraordinary artistic vision, Rachel was a beautiful light herself,’ said Artistic Director and CEO Ella Caldwell, in a tribute shared on Red Stitch’s website. ‘She embraced those around her with warmth and depth that made you a more courageous artist. ‘Working alongside Rachel, you felt the resonance of her heart and her vision. Her passion, insight and caring nature persisted alongside a rigour and depth of talent that enriched every piece she made.’ That combination – the ability to illuminate both a stage and the people working on it – has emerged as a recurring thread in the tributes following her death. A legacy written in light Burke’s career began after she graduated from Rusden College in 1989. She worked as a theatre technician and tutor at St Martins Youth Arts Centre from 1989 to 1991 before establishing herself as a freelance lighting designer. She subsequently worked nationally and internationally across theatre, dance, music, puppetry and architecture. Her theatre credits included major productions for Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, The Australian Ballet, Victorian Opera, Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre, Playbox and La Mama. Her work was recognised with 13 Green Room Awards, alongside two Helpmann Award nominations, and numerous IES Victorian and National Awards of Excellence for architectural lighting design. Her Green Room-winning work ranged from The Glass Mermaid for Playbox in 1994, through to My Sister Jill (Melbourne Theatre Company) and Wittenoom (Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre) in 2023. Most recently, she brought her artistic vision to the critically-acclaimed, Green Room-nominated productions Meow Meow’s The Red Shoes (Malthouse Theatre, co-produced with Belvoir and Black Swan State Theatre Company) and Kadimah Yiddish Theatre’s Green Room Award-winning production of Yentl, which transferred to London earlier this year after a sell-out Australian tour. Her work on The Red Shoes was part of a career that continued to evolve across disciplines, even as she remained deeply connected to the theatre community that had been central to her practice for more than 30 years. Beyond the spotlight Burke’s practice extended well beyond the stage. She was Senior Associate at architectural lighting consultancy Relume Consulting and had previously worked as an architectural lighting designer with Electrolight. Her architectural projects included the whole-of-site exterior lighting masterplan for Arts Centre Melbourne in 2007, as well as lighting projects for AAMI Park, Hamer Hall, Lonsdale Street in Dandenong and the Robina Light Sculpture. Education was another important part of Burke’s practice. She taught lighting at the Victorian College of the Arts and lectured in Light in Performance for the University of Melbourne’s Bachelor of Design (Performance) between 2017 and 2019. Burke leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, as well as generations of artists, designers, students and collaborators whose practices were shaped by her generosity and example. The memorial gathering at Malthouse Theatre on 15 September will offer the theatre community an opportunity to come together to celebrate that legacy and to remember an artist whose work made light an essential part of the storytelling. The gathering celebrating the working life of Rachel Burke will take place at Malthouse Theatre on 15 September at 6pm. It is open to the entire arts community and RSVPs are requested.
