The relocation follows the announcement that Northern Lights, which operated as an artist-led warehouse space, was being closed and repurposed - resulting in the displacement of dozens of working artists. The dramatic and "disheartening" events unfolded on the morning of April 22, when people were evicted from their workplace at Northern Lights, one of the Baltic Triangle's most distinctive buildings, and located in Cains Brewery Village. The Liverpool ECHO were told of people's 'shock', after becoming aware of the situation only when they were greeted by security guards standing in front of a locked door, with an eviction notice stuck in the middle. In a previous article on the evolution of the Baltic Triangle area (April 18), the ECHO reported on the plight of tenants who were served eviction notices by the Dusanj Holding Limited (DHL), leaving them just a few weeks to pack up and find somewhere else to set up. One of the few spaces still operational at the time was The Royal Standard (TRS), home to the city's largest community of artists. TRS' lease was due to expire at the end of June so it had already accepted the need to move onto another location. Subsequent talks led to TRS negotiating a leave date of May 31, the ECHO understands, still several weeks before the lease was due to expire. Despite TRS working towards this date in good faith, its representatives were informed they had been evicted with immediate effect, and that the landlord had seized control of the property for unpaid rent. We were notified about TRS' eviction, and were later shown a video confirming the locks had been changed at the entrance to the premises. Back in April, we spoke to a trustee at TRS art studio, who told us about the upset caused by the situation, and the plight of people who rely on the studio for their livelihoods, "People are just feeling really lost about what to do. They're worried about their equipment and they're worried about gaining access. It's really, really dire." We contacted DHL, and asked for a response to the claims and concerns raised by the people working at TRS. A representative for DHL told us it was aware of the claims, but were unable to comment further due to an ongoing "legal matter". Since then, the ECHO understands TRS were actively looking for an alternative premises, and it has now provided an update (July 15), confirming it had finally found a new home. TRS has agreed to relocate to Elevator Studios (ES), a Grade II-listed building on the corner of Parliament Street and Jamaica Street, and still within the Baltic Triangle area. The deal arose after CERT Property, which manages ES, heard about the plight of TRS and worked with the studio to ensure it remained in the area. Ellis Michael, Commercial Asset Manager for Elevator Studios at CERT, said: "[Bringing in TRS] in alongside our other like‑minded creators aligns perfectly with our mission to be a central hub for Liverpool’s creatives, while successfully preventing the fragmentation of this vital independent collective.” Founded in 2006, The Royal Standard is a registered charity and is a respected cornerstone of the North West art scene, providing affordable studios, exhibitions, and professional development opportunities for emerging and mid‑career artists. Responding to the latest developments, a spokesperson for TRS said: "Our relocation to Elevator Studios means we don't just survive the closure of Northern Lights, but we get to remain in the Baltic Triangle community. "Our new space allows us to build a tailored environment for our artists, offering a mix of private working areas and shared facilities. "We are excited for our new home and connect with the fantastic mix of musicians, artists and independent businesses here.”
