Второе убийство за две недели на Лансинг-Ривер-трел: семья погибшего требует установки камер наблюдения

Two dead on Lansing River Trail in two weeks; family of latest victim calls for action A Lansing family is mourning the loss of Louis Woodruff, 57, as community leaders address trail safety concerns LANSING, Mich. (News 10) - A Lansing family is mourning and calling for increased safety measures following the death of a man who was found with severe injuries on the Lansing River Trail. The man’s death marked the second fatal attack on the trail in two weeks. Louis Woodruff, 57, was found by Lansing Police on Sunday in the Old Town section of the trail with severe injuries to his face according to his daughter Joanna. He was rushed to a local hospital, where his family ultimately had to make the difficult decision to take him off life support on Tuesday to prevent him from spending the rest of his life in a vegetative state. Joanna Woodruff is demanding the city take action to protect trail users. “If police know that this is occurring, especially at the same spot on the river trail, why aren’t there more cameras?” Joanna Woodruff said. For Joanna, the Lansing River Trail was once a place filled with warm memories of her father teaching her and her siblings how to fish. “Helping us cast our lines into the river or taking off the fish if we were too scared to... he was very well loved,” she recalled. Woodruff had not seen her father, who was living homeless in the Lansing area, in 15 years until she received an urgent call from her aunt on Sunday morning when he was found. “My last living memory of him is laying in that hospital room trying to fight for his life,” Joanna said. “It’s hard, it’s definitely hard because he has three grandkids that he’s never going to meet.” Woodruff’s death is the second homicide along the public trail system in a two-week span. Last month, another man was stabbed to death on the Lansing River Trail near Michigan Avenue. The back-to-back tragedies have raised serious concerns among frequenters of the trail. Richard Miles, president of the Friends of the Lansing Regional Trails, acknowledged the growing public safety anxiety and the debate surrounding surveillance. “Certainly with all the conflict and concern about Flock cameras, people don’t like to be surveilled but there is a trade-off: safety is an issue,” Miles said. Joanna Woodruff believes that trade-off is necessary to protect lives. “We’re so worried about getting the Flock cameras up. What are we doing to protect people on the river trail?” she asked. While she hopes her father’s death will spark change, Joanna says she can never bring herself to walk the trail again. “I already have the pictures of injuries in my head of what happened. I don’t want to walk down there to see where it happened, to take that last little bit of good memories that I once had with him,” she said. Lansing Police told New 10 that they are exploring the possibility that the two homicides are connected. They also stated that extra patrols are happening in the area. In the meantime, trail advocates are urging the public to exercise caution. Miles advised trail users not to walk alone during the early morning or late evening hours. If you must go out, Miles says let someone know your route, walk with a partner, and remain highly aware of your surroundings. Stream News 10 Lansing on your favorite devices!
