Как креативность и устойчивость помогают бизнесу выживать в сложных условиях Мозамбика

Mozambique demonstrates a paradox that many business leaders overlook: the greater the operating constraint, the more valuable local knowledge becomes. What appears, from the outside, to be a market defined by limitations is, in practice, a market that rewards adaptability, creativity and resilience. Success here is not determined by who has the biggest budget or the most advanced technology. It is determined by who understands the realities on the ground and can turn constraints into commercial advantage. People ask me what it’s like doing business in Mozambique, and I never quite know where to begin, because the honest answer is that it’s challenging in almost every way you can imagine, and rewarding in ways that are hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. Mozambique has become one of the most demanding markets I know for media and communications. Over the past few years alone, we have weathered a strained economy, political unrest, and natural disasters, and somehow, we keep coming out the other side still standing, still operational, still smiling. That does not happen by accident. It happens because we are forced, again and again, to reinvent ourselves, to be first with an idea, to think outside the box as a matter of routine rather than exception, and to do all of it under some of the tightest client budgets in the region. The realities outsiders don’t see From the outside, Mozambique can look like any other emerging market working through its growing pains. From the inside, the picture is far more textured. While most of our sister markets across the continent are shifting from traditional media towards digital, we are, in many respects, caught between two worlds. Traditional media remains the most reliable way to reach our audience at scale, even as our youth increasingly live online. Yet that shift is, in real terms, still a drop in the ocean. The numbers explain why. Mozambique is only about 37% urbanised. The remaining 63% of the population sits across a rural landscape with fragmented infrastructure, where reaching people is genuinely difficult. Mobile data is expensive relative to income, which means digital realistically reaches only around 20% of the population, while traditional media, for all its strengths, also has its reach limits. Planning a campaign here means holding both of those truths at once and building a media mix that respects market outsiders often assume is further along the digital curve than it is. Then there is the mechanics of simply doing business. Foreign exchange is limited, and paying international suppliers, Meta, global digital publishers, and the platforms every modern media plan depends on, is not a matter of clicking a button. Commercial banks can only process international transfers once they themselves have sourced foreign currency through the Central Bank. It is a queue most outsiders never see, and it shapes timelines in ways that are invisible from a client brief. When people say, “just use a credit card”, they misunderstand how credit works here. Our cards are reserved for essentials, medical care, education, accommodation, and a handful of subscriptions, not the kind of flexible online purchasing taken for granted elsewhere. Daily spending limits add another constraint on top of that. Nothing about it is simple, which is exactly why finding local solutions is not just a workaround. It is the strategy. It is also, quietly, good for the country. It supports local business and generates employment that would otherwise leak abroad. The biggest misconceptions The most persistent misconception is that Mozambique’s challenges are simply Africa’s challenges, generically applied, that what works in Johannesburg, Nairobi or Lagos will translate here with minor tweaks. It will not. Every one of the frictions above, the foreign exchange constraints, the credit card limitations and the urban rural media split, are specific to this market’s structure. A strategy built without them baked in from the start will stall at execution, not at the idea stage. The second misconception is that constraint means creative compromise. In practice, the opposite is often true. Tight budgets and infrastructural limits force sharper thinking, not blander thinking. Some of the boldest ideas Dentsu Mozambique has produced came directly out of needing to do more with less. Lessons from navigating uncertainty If there is one lesson this market has taught us above all others, it is that resilience is a discipline, not a personality trait. It must be built into how a business operates, not just how its people feel. When I think about how dentsu Mozambique has kept going through difficult years, it comes down, fundamentally, to the people. A team of strong, determined individuals who are not easily scared off. That is the difference between a business that survives a shock and one that does not. It has also meant being willing to change what we sell. We brought in new services, including PR, to widen our offering at moments when clients were not looking for conventional media at all. One of the clearest examples was working with a well-known Mozambican artist to paint a basketball court in a betting client’s colours, with no client branding anywhere on it, and building an entire ESG narrative around that single act of community investment. It was not the brief anyone would have written a year earlier. It was the brief the moment required. “The great years, we celebrate the victories. The tougher years, we celebrate the survival.” How Dentsu Mozambique has retained and grown client partnerships Retention in a market like this is not won on convenience. It is won on creativity that shows up even when conditions do not cooperate. We have made a habit of bringing campaigns to life through out of home media in ways that surprise people, precisely because that unpredictability builds trust. We built a bus shelter that generated a light breeze and a fine mist to cool commuters while they waited. We dressed a massive out of home site in the shirts of the FIFA World Cup’s daily leading teams, changing it as the tournament progressed. We turned a billboard into a living, flowered installation, purely in the name of art and attention. None of these ideas were the safe option. Each one required a client willing to trust an agency’s instinct, and an agency willing to solve the practical problems, sourcing, coordination, foreign exchange, and timing, which stand between a clever idea and an installed one. That combination, repeated consistently, is what has kept partnerships intact through good years and hard ones alike. Trust, agility and local market understanding In a market like Mozambique, trust is not a soft add on to a business relationship. It is the infrastructure the relationship runs on. It matters enormously to have suppliers who can be relied upon when a normal supply chain has extra friction built in, a creative team that pushes for solutions rather than excuses, and clients who do not accept “no” as a definitive answer. We never shy away from a challenge because, in this market, the willingness to keep looking for the workable answer is often the entire difference between a campaign that happens and one that does not. Agility follows from that same foundation. Some years are simply better than others, and no amount of planning changes that. What we can control is our focus. Present ideas, be available, be flexible, collaborate closely with our partners to find viable solutions, and keep pushing forward regardless of the conditions. Local market understanding is what makes that agility useful rather than reactive, knowing which constraint is real and which is negotiable, and where creative energy will move the needle. What other markets can learn from Mozambique Leaders in more developed or more digitally mature markets can take a few things from how business gets done here. First, a media mix should be built from the ground up around how people access information, not around what is fashionable elsewhere. A 20% reach digital channel is not a strategy on its own. Second, constraint is a creative input, not just an obstacle. Some of the best ideas in this article came directly from needing to solve a limitation, not from having an unlimited budget. Third, relationships with suppliers and clients built on genuine trust are more valuable, and more durable, than relationships built purely on efficiency because trust is what survives a shock. Why resilience may be Africa’s most underrated business capability Resilience does not show up on a pitch deck, and it is rarely the headline of a case study, yet it may be the single most valuable capability a business can have on this continent. Being resilient is, quite simply, the only way to do business in Mozambique. It means never backing down, not from a difficult year, a currency constraint, a client’s tightened budget, or a market that looks, from a distance, harder than it must be up close. The campaigns still launch. The partnerships still hold. The business remains operational. That quiet continuity is easy to overlook, but in a market like Mozambique, it is often the real achievement. And that is the biggest lesson Mozambique offers other markets. Constraints will always exist, whether they come from economics, infrastructure, consumer behaviour, or market conditions. The difference lies in how organisations respond to them. Constraint is an economic reality, but resilience is a commercial capability. The businesses that thrive are not those with the fewest obstacles. They are the ones that learn how to turn those obstacles into opportunities, repeatedly.
