В колледже Мэрроу открыт курс по этичному созданию подкастов о преступлениях

A new true crime podcasting and content creation class is being offered at the Murrow college, aiming to inject some empathy into the art of the true crime podcasting. Matt Loveless, who is teaching the class, spent many years in the field working in investigative journalism, returning to Pullman only to be asked to teach news reporting and broadcast production. Loveless is involved in many classes on campus, offering a wide variety of reporting, journalism, broadcasting and podcast classes. The newest of these this year, true crime podcasting. The new class was brought to WSU to establish a new, creative way for students to learn in a unique way. “We wanted to meet students where they are interested and wanted to educate students,” Loveless said. Loveless said this class was created partially due to the Idaho murders. Through the truly unfortunate times of these murders, many podcasts sprung up, some more respectful than others. With a topic as sensitive as this, it was apparent people need to be educated on the correct and respectful ways to address these situations in reporting. In this new class, students are exposed to many different true crime podcasts where they critically evaluate what we like and what we should not like about true crime podcasts. Through this class, students are to come away with critical awareness and responsibility when it comes to media and the sharing of information, hoping to help students better succeed in the future when pursuing content creation. “I want to advocate for the people that do podcasts responsibly and right. Listen to the right ones and support people who are empathetic,” Loveless said. This new class was brought to WSU through the collaboration of many professors from multiple colleges to hit all the major contributing factors of the aspects of creating podcasts, including the technical, analytical and ethical aspects. This class was created to help impart the art of storytelling into students, showing them how to create something that is captivating for audiences in a critical and respectful way. As the media is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society, our school systems are adapting to it. Giving students more opportunities like this class to explore career and learning pathways in a non-standard way. “Students are creating content everywhere, and we want to meet students where they are and get their voices out there with all the information and have them do it right. Keep telling us what you want,” Loveless said. So far, 28 students have registered for the class.
