Tropical Storm Arthur evacuees told their stay at Paragon extended to Sept. 15 MARKSVILLE, La. (KALB) - Tropical Storm Arthur evacuees gathered their belongings on the morning of September 1 at Paragon Casino Resort and waited to find out whether they would have a place to stay that night. Evacuees waited inside the lobby of the casino for word on whether they could stay or would be evicted. Many evacuees had already left to find other accommodations. Others stayed behind, waiting to hear from their FEMA caseworkers. Mary Lemoine and her two daughters have been moving between shelters since the hurricane. “I hope nobody else has to be like we’ve been through. We’ve been at shelters, two or three shelters. The last one was in Mansura,” she said. Herbert McDonald, Jr. and his wife waited in the lobby with their belongings for word from their FEMA caseworker about whether they could stay. “You’re on a rollercoaster ride. Right now, you have people walking around now, don’t know whether we’re gonna have somewhere to stay tonight or not,” he said. “For some of us, the house is just not ready. They’ve taken pictures. There are plumbing problems. A lot of the contractors are spreading themselves thin trying to help everybody, and it’s just...we need more time.” McDonald wishes he could have stayed on his property in a trailer rather than going back and forth every day from Marksville and Simmesport. " We have farm animals, so it is a daily thing going back and forth, feeding the animals and the dogs. So, we don’t know. Everybody’s in a ‘we don’t know’ position. I mean, there’s stories, stories, and stories and stories of people. You just can’t move into a house where there’s no plumbing, no flooring, and the roof’s still leaking."
