Veteran journalist Estelle Ellis died on last Wednesday evening at the age of 51 (Source @ Oudtshoorn Couran Oudtshoorn Couran ) Her work covered a wide range of issues affecting the Eastern Cape, including healthcare, the justice system, governance failures, water shortages, and the lived realities of communities too often forgotten by those in power. She was also at the forefront of reporting on the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring that the experiences of vulnerable communities were documented and understood. A desire to make a difference Former colleague and editor Janet Heard described Ellis as “a journalist in the truest sense of the word: a prolific and powerful writer”. “Driven by a desire to make a difference, she held power to account and ensured her work had a positive impact on people’s lives. “She got down and got dirty to get her stories. Her sense of urgency and passion were infectious, igniting, and inspiring journalists over decades,” Heard says. Those who worked alongside Ellis remember her not only for her journalistic excellence, but also for her unwavering commitment to justice and her determination to improve the lives of others through her reporting. She consistently used her platform to amplify the concerns of marginalised communities and to demand accountability from institutions and public officials. Service to communities Daily Maverick editor Heather Robertson paid tribute to Ellis as a “warrior for truth” whose journalism was always rooted in service to communities. “Journalism was not just about your byline; it was about making a difference to the lives of others,” Robertson says. “You have left a giant Estelle-shaped hole in our Daily Maverick family. May your spirit live on in all the journalists you guided and mentored.” Angela Daniels, Daily Maverick Baywatch Bureau Chief and a longtime colleague, described Ellis as a fierce advocate for people who were too often ignored. “There was no halfway with Estelle – not in her journalism, her friendships, her family, or the causes she believed in,” Daniels says. “We cannot replace Estelle. There simply will never be another.” Power of the pen “Estelle not only reported her stories, she lived them. She understood the power of her pen and wielded it purposefully to improve the lives of the people she gave voice to. She was a fierce journalist who despite enormous impact, did not see herself as bigger than the stories she told. Estelle, we will miss your tenacity and your wicked sense of humour that often left us crying with laughter,” said Jillian Green, editor-in-chief, Daily Maverick. Journalism as a public service Sanef identifies Ellis as part of a generation of journalists who understood journalism as a public service and who devoted their careers to exposing wrongdoing, defending the vulnerable and strengthening democracy through factual, courageous reporting. Her passing is a significant loss not only to Daily Maverick and the Eastern Cape media community, but to South African journalism as a whole. Her legacy will endure in the stories she told, the people whose lives she touched, and the many journalists she inspired and mentored throughout her career. Sanef extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues at Daily Maverick, and the countless communities across the Eastern Cape whose stories she helped bring to light. May she rest in peace. Distinguished career Before she joined Daily Maverick’s Eastern Cape correspondent, she worked on Die Burger, the Cape Argus, then The Star, before she settled at The Herald, in the then Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, where she built her name as a senior reporter covering the courts and, increasingly, health. Born in Sasolburg in 1974, Ellis joined Daily Maverick in 2019 after an accomplished career in journalism, including her years at The Herald in Gqeberha. She quickly became a central figure in Daily Maverick’s Eastern Cape reporting, earning the respect of colleagues, sources, and communities alike through her relentless pursuit of truth and accountability.
