Trees crash into Montello horse barn while horses still inside
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A powerful storm sent trees crashing at a horse farm in Montello, with one going through a barn and narrowly missing a horse.
Les Warzynski has lived on his Montello horse farm for about a decade, where he breeds and raises horses with his wife Sarah.
Early Wednesday morning, Warzynski said he and his family woke to a noise so powerful they could feel it from bed.
“You heard it, and you felt it in bed,” Warzynski said. “It’s like, ‘Hey, whatever that was, was big.’”
He grabbed lights and headed outside in the dark to see what had happened. The first sign of trouble was at the driveway, where fallen trees blocked the way.
When Warzynski made his way around one of the barns, he found trees had fallen onto the roof and through a wall. Four horses were inside.
“Weren’t quite sure what we were going to find,” Warzynski said.
Despite damaged fencing, he said the horses stayed inside until the family could move them to another barn.
Among the horses was Luna, a 19-year-old born on the farm. Warzynski said a tree came through the roof and wall near where she was standing.
“Where she was standing and where the tree is, she’s three foot away,” he said.
Warzynski has a special connection with Luna, who was born and raised at his farm.
“They’re all a pleasure to be around, but she’s pretty special,” Warzynski said.
All 12 horses on the property escaped the storm without injury.
“Anyone who has horses knows, there’s good days and bad days, and this is a good one when you walk away from it and no one’s hurt,” Warzynski said.
Once daylight arrived, the family got a better look at the extent of the damage, including downed trees, damaged barns and fencing.
Warzynski said family members arrived with heavy equipment to help clear the property and reopen the driveway.
Warzynski hopes to get the farm back in shape by spring as the farm is expecting seven of its own foals, in addition to foals from outside mares.
For now, despite the damage left behind, Warzynski said he is just grateful the people and animals on the farm made it through safely.
