The programme also expects host laboratories to contribute to the funding of the fellowship. The exact arrangements can depend on the selected host institution and fellowship. How Does the TRIL Programme Work? The TRIL Programme combines research training, laboratory experience, and international scientific collaboration. Step 1: Check Your Eligibility First, applicants should confirm that they meet the basic requirements. Check that you: - Are a national of a developing country. - Currently reside in a developing country. - Have at least a Master’s degree. - Have sufficient English proficiency. - Have relevant scientific or research experience. Step 2: Select a Relevant Research Area Identify the TRIL research field that best matches your academic background and research interests. Potential areas include: - Physics - Cosmology - Astroparticle physics - Quantitative life sciences - Environmental physics - Science and technology innovation Step 3: Prepare Your Academic Profile Prepare an updated academic and research CV. Include: - Educational qualifications. - Research experience. - Laboratory experience. - Publications. - Research projects. - Technical skills. - Academic achievements. Step 4: Develop Your Research or Training Plan Your proposed research or training should clearly explain what you want to accomplish during your time in Italy. A strong plan should address: - Your research topic. - The scientific problem or question. - Your proposed activities. - Skills you want to develop. - Expected research outcomes. - Why training in an Italian laboratory is valuable. - How the experience will support your future research. Step 5: Connect With the Host Laboratory The fellowship involves research or training in an Italian laboratory. The host laboratory provides the required research environment, laboratory space, and relevant institutional support. Applicants should ensure that their proposed work is compatible with the expertise and facilities available at the intended host institution. Step 6: Complete the Fellowship Selected fellows undertake the approved research or training programme in Italy. They are expected to follow the programme requirements, comply with host laboratory rules, and complete the agreed activities. Opportunities for Different Career Stages The TRIL Programme supports scientists at different stages of their research careers. Ph.D. Students Students pursuing a Ph.D. or equivalent degree can receive the €1,300 monthly grant category. The opportunity can provide Ph.D. researchers with international laboratory experience and exposure to advanced research methods. Early-Career Scientists Scientists who obtained their Ph.D. less than five years ago can receive the €1,500 monthly grant category. This can be particularly valuable for researchers building their independent research careers. Experienced Scientists Scientists who have held their Ph.D. for more than five years can receive the €1,600 monthly grant category. The programme also encourages experienced and senior scientists to participate in international research collaboration. Opportunities for Female Scientists Female researchers are specifically encouraged to apply, with preference potentially given to female candidates. The programme aims to support broader participation in international scientific research and create opportunities for researchers who may have fewer opportunities for overseas research training. Opportunities for Scientists From Least Developed Countries Scientists from least developed countries (LDCs) may receive preference during selection. Applicants from these countries should clearly demonstrate their academic qualifications, research experience, and the potential benefits of the proposed international training. Can Former TRIL Fellows Reapply? Yes, former fellows may be eligible to reapply under certain conditions. Previous participants should carefully review the applicable rules before submitting a new application because repeat participation may be subject to specific programme requirements. Responsibilities of TRIL Fellows The fellowship provides substantial financial and institutional support, but selected fellows also have responsibilities.
