Topper Expands Handmade Product Line The venerable Topper Cigar Co. has expanded its lines of handmade cigars. The company has added a new, diminutive size to its three premium lines called The Shorty, which measures 4 1/4 inches long with a 43 ring gauge. That smoke is now available in the Topper 1894, Topper 1894 Broadleaf, and Topper 125th Anniversary lines. It has a suggested retail price of $5.50 in the Topper 1894 lines, and $6.50 for the 125th Anniversary. They come in boxes of 25 cigars. Topper has also expanded the Topper 1894 Broadleaf brand, which is now available in the same sizes as the original 1894 line. In addition to The Shorty, there is the Toro (6 by 54, $10.50); Corona (6 by 44, $8.75) and Robusto (4 by 50, $8.75). The cigars are made with Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers, Dominican binders and Dominican filler grown from broadleaf seed. “This blend is unlike any other we've had in the past,” says Topper owner Chris Topper, the fourth-generation Topper to run the family business after his father, Frank; his grandfather, Curtis; and his great grandfather, B.P. The cigars are made from long-filler tobacco and rolled by hand in the Dominican Republic at the De Los Reyes factory. All of the new items are shipping now. Topper makes its headquarters in Meriden, Connecticut. It’s an old brand—even older than its owner thought. For nearly all of its history, Topper was listed as being founded in 1896 by his great grandfather, B.P. But in 2024, he discovered documents that led him to believe that B.P. actually started in the cigar business two years prior, in 1894. (Some stories on the company website still list 1896 as the year of founding.) According to the new discovery, the company is 132 years old, and the year 1894 is emblazoned on the new cigar boxes. Toppers were originally made by hand, and that production was converted to machines in the 1960s. About a dozen years ago, the company got back into making handmade cigars, and now sells a combination of machine-made and handmade smokes.
