Toledo police to start ‘compassion fatigue’ training; psychology expert explains what it is
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Toledo Police Department is adding new training for officers after the chief said viral interactions with youth reflected poorly on the department.
One of those trainings is meant to combat something law enforcement can be susceptible to: compassion fatigue.
Psychology experts say compassion fatigue is something that impacts what are known as the “helping professions.” That group can include first responders, nurses, doctors and mental health professionals.
Emma Church is a graduate trainee at the University of Toledo Psychology Clinic. The training clinic serves the community with individual therapy and psychological assessments offered at a sliding scale.
Church says compassion fatigue is caused by a combination of burnout and stress from helping people in or with traumatic situations.
“One of the big things is that it might make you less enthusiastic about your work, it might make it more difficult for you to feel engaged in your relationships,” Church said.
Symptoms build up over time.
Church said compassion fatigue can make work seem like group of tasks to check off quickly so you can be finished.
People may feel fatigued and emotionally drained, potentially impacting how they interact with people at work.
“Maybe quick tempered, or some kind of irritability in that person you wouldn’t normally notice,” Church said.
Two Toledo police interactions with young people went viral for how officers engaged with teenagers.
While those officers may not have been experiencing compassion fatigue, Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said the department would implement training on that topic.
“In each case, there opportunities for better judgment and engagement. whether an officer’s actions were determined to be within policy or fell short of department expectations, training remains one of the most effective tools for maintaining professionalism and public trust,” Troendle said during a June press conference about the interactions.
In general, Church said training and awareness can be beneficial in preventing compassion fatigue.
Chief Troendle announced that in addition to compassion fatigue training, the department will have training in professionalism, cultural competency, child development, and juvenile conflict response.
A spokesperson for TPD told 13 Action News the department is currently working on developing the program, and the compassion fatigue training is expected to start next year.
