Tokyo Gas invests in AIVALIX, eyes TUMSY-INFRAI water utility link
KEY POINTS
- Tokyo Gas invests in AIVALIX, an AI startup focused on infrastructure maintenance for water, gas and plant facilities
- Initial collaboration centers on the water sector, including potential linkage between TGES's TUMSY and AIVALIX's INFRAI
- AIVALIX receives its first investment from an operating company as Tokyo Gas eyes broader infrastructure applications
Tokyo Gas has invested in AIVALIX, a Japanese startup developing AI-based infrastructure maintenance tools, as the utility group looks to strengthen preventive maintenance and asset management across infrastructure facilities, the company said on August 28.
The investment comes as aging infrastructure and labor shortages increase pressure on operators to manage equipment more efficiently under limited staffing and budgets. Tokyo Gas said AIVALIX analyzes equipment data, inspection records and failure histories with AI to help infrastructure operators visualize and predict failure and deterioration risks, set priorities for inspections and renewals, and formulate maintenance and budget plans.
AIVALIX focuses on infrastructure sectors including water and sewerage, gas and plants. Tokyo Gas decided to invest because it expects to combine AIVALIX's AI technology and business development capabilities with the Tokyo Gas group's equipment management expertise and customer base built through its energy and infrastructure businesses. The company said the investment is AIVALIX's first from an operating company.
Following the investment, Tokyo Gas plans to advance collaboration between the group's infrastructure management and operations know-how and AIVALIX's AI technology. As a first step, the companies will examine applications in the water utility sector and make joint proposals to water operators.
The collaboration could include linking INFRAI, AIVALIX's AI product, with TUMSY, an infrastructure management solution provided by Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions, or TGES. According to the release, INFRAI supports users from AI-based deterioration forecasting through renewal planning and broader asset management and management strategy formulation.
TUMSY is a GIS-based mapping system for equipment management that was first put into practical use in the late 1970s and has been refined for about 50 years. It had been introduced at about 150 utilities and other operators across Japan as of August 2026, according to the release.
Tokyo Gas said it plans to consider expanding the collaboration into other infrastructure fields, including gas and plants, while drawing on knowledge gained in the water sector.
Japan's infrastructure operators have been under growing pressure to extend the life of aging assets while coping with workforce constraints. Water utilities in particular face a large stock of pipes and facilities built during earlier decades of rapid economic growth, making maintenance planning and renewal prioritization a persistent issue.
