Члены общества истории спасли от сноса первую школу долины Санта-Кларита

Today in SCV History, August 14, 1986, members of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society stood in front of a bulldozer to save what remained of the Mitchell Adobe, the valley’s first schoolhouse, from demolition. Originally built in 1860 at Lost Canyon and Sand Canyon Roads in Canyon Country by Col. Thomas F. and Martha Mitchell, the adobe began as a miner’s shack and grew into the headquarters of their 160-acre ranch. Martha Mitchell opened the valley’s first formal school in the adobe kitchen in 1872, teaching children from the Mitchell, Stewart, and Lang families. Classes later moved to the Lang Hotel and Spa in 1879, and a dedicated schoolhouse was built in 1886 on land donated by the Mitchells. The adobe was abandoned in 1888 when the Mitchells built a new two-story wood-frame home, eventually falling into ruin. In 1919, the couple’s son-in-law, Walter Murphy, salvaged bricks from the original structure to build a nearby dwelling, which later served as a guest house, apiary, and tack room. When the building faced demolition in 1986, Historical Society members secured the bricks, some dating back to 1860, and transported them to Heritage Junction in William S. Hart Park. There, the adobe was reconstructed and dedicated in 1989, preserving a tangible link to the valley’s earliest days of education. To read yesterday’s Today in History, click HERE.
