In 1904, black patrons, under the leadership of Prof. J.W. Holley, who taught last year, purchased a lot directly behind Palmetto Cemetery on North Main Street to build a new school. In 1909, Supt. Tucker reported that most of the country schools had already opened for the fall term. They opened early because, after Christmas, many parents took their children out to help with farm work. In 1917, Bob James served a complimentary farewell dinner at his Hotel James to thirty-three citizens who had “been called to the colors” in the new WWI National Army. In 1922, the celebration began at 10:30 with field day sports, featuring some of the state’s fastest athletes, along with stunts, sack and potato races, ball-throwing contests, and Boy Scout drills, with music all day by Palatka’s famous band promising fun for old and young. Palatka’s “Monster Labor Day Celebration” featured two championship baseball games: at 2 pm, the Pals semi-pro state champions vs. St. Petersburg, state league champions, followed by the Pals vs. Lake City, a fast semi-pro team. American Legion Hall was the setting of a brilliant ball with special music for everyone who loved to dance. In 1934, serving since June 14, 1909, as city carrier, clerk, assistant postmaster and postmaster of the Palatka post office, Nelson August Stumpe would retire on August 31 by law because of his age after reaching retirement age for post office clerks on August 21 of this year. In 1934, the Ravine Gardens, officially usually opening on Labor Day, would not open until December 1 due to construction work going on in the Ravines; drivers of 30 cars bearing out-of-state license tags were told they could drive along White Water Drive to get a glimpse of the gardens but the official opening would not be until December 1st. The greatest improvement would be in the Court of States where 5,000 azaleas of the dwarf variety had been planted. The 48 columns of rock construction would soon be ready to fly the flags of all 48 states. In 1937, the Howell Theatre offered a midnight show that included the Tommy Farr-Joe Louis fight film along with the Sunday feature, “Broadway Melody.” In 1939, Ed Wykoff, later a Putnam County principal, pitched a four-hit 3-1 victory for the Palatka State League Putnam All-Stars over the Palatka Azaleas. In 1942, with so many men serving in the armed forces, women were being employed to keep the labor force at home productive. One in every six women over 18, not in the labor force, would be needed for the war effort. In 1945, in his 7th fight, J.W. Warwick of East Palatka waded into Thomas Pevey, veteran of 30 fights, with a vim that had the crowd on its feet throughout the fast and furious four-round draw; many said the fight was one of the best matches on the 7-card program at the Jacksonville Armory.
