В Миннесоте сотни искателей сокровищ выкопали пастбище ради мифических 30 тысяч долларов

On this day in 1923, hundreds of treasure seekers flocked to Richwood, Minnesota, digging for a rumored $30,000 in buried treasure after a supposed map surfaced. Here is the complete story as it appeared in the paper that day: ADVERTISEMENT HIDDEN TREASURE SEEKERS DIG UP ISOLATED FIELD NEAR RICHWOOD Tale of Buried Gold Attracts 500 People Looking for $30,000 Detroit, Minn., Sept. 4.—Attracted by tales of treasure buried near a marked tree by an old log cabin in the woods near Richwood, 16 miles north of here, treasure seekers over the weekend dug up practically the entire pasture in which the marked tree is located. The little village of Richwood, which once boasted a sawmill but now has only a few stores, a hotel and a handful of houses, watched with little apparent interest. They had heard of the “hidden treasure” before and have watched other expeditions scout through the woods and dig around the trees without success. Cars from all over Minnesota and North Dakota carrying spades, picks and shovels, lined the roads into Richwood over the weekend. The road from Detroit to Richwood carried more cars than the Moorhead-Detroit road on a busy summer Sunday. A map purporting to show where $30,000 in buried treasure was located was found by Minneapolis police on a man arrested in the Mill City last week. The treasure was supposed to have been buried by a man now serving a term in the Minnesota penitentiary who drew the map and gave it to a friend, who gave it to the man arrested. Minneapolis officials detailed several detectives to go to Richwood and locate the treasure, but they have not publicly made their appearance there, according to reports from Richwood, unless they were mixed in with the several hundred other treasure diggers.
