ART A New Art Fair Is Coming To Chicago Chicago Art Fair, a new contemporary and modern art fair, will make its debut at The Mart this fall from October 7-10. “Designed to celebrate Chicago’s rich cultural landscape and strengthen its position as a premier destination for the visual arts, Chicago Art Fair will offer an intimate, gallery-focused experience featuring thoughtfully selected exhibitors presenting museum-quality paintings, sculpture, photography, mixed media and more.” Exhibitors for the inaugural edition include Echo Fine Arts, Hilton Contemporary, Jerald Melberg Gallery, McCormick Gallery, Melissa Morgan Fine Art, Nancy Hoffman Gallery and Vallarino Fine Art, with more to be announced in the weeks ahead. More here. De Kooning, Dance And Digital Art On North Michigan The Canopy at 900 North Michigan Shops, an art installation across the shopping center’s ceiling, has partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet to reimagine Willem de Kooning’s work through dance and immersive digital art. “Excavation of Movement” is an exhibition at 900 North Michigan that “translates de Kooning’s expressive lines and physical brushwork into choreography performed by Joffrey Ballet dancers, then brings that movement to life across the Canopy’s 190 feet of LED screens.” Trump Officials Propose Sell-Off Of “Woke” Painting by Kehinde Wiley “The State Department wants to sell a painting by the celebrated artist Kehinde Wiley that the director of its Art in Embassies program called ‘very woke’ and ‘aesthetically terrifying,'” reports The New York Times (gift link). “It was removed from the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic last week. The painting by Wiley, who rose to fame after being selected to create President Barack Obama’s official portrait, features four Dominican models against a floral backdrop. State Department officials removed the painting from the embassy last week, after first hiding it behind a tarp designed with an image of the American flag.” DESIGN Sculptor Selected For DuSable Park Monument “A sculptor and architect have been hired to build a monument to Chicago’s founder at a new lakefront park scheduled to finally break ground this year,” reports Block Club. “The Chicago Park District has hired sculptor Branly Cadet and architect Rodney Leon to build a statue of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, Chicago’s first permanent non-native settler, at the to-be-built DuSable Park. DuSable Park is coming to an undeveloped parcel of land at 451 North DuSable Lake Shore Drive, near the mouth of the Chicago River.” Work on the park “is slated to begin this year and be completed next year, according to the Park District.” “O’Hare Flyer” Would Run From The Old Post Office In Fifteen Minutes Picking up where Rahm Emanuel and Elon Musk left off in 2018, “a new company says it can succeed with the O’Hare Flyer—an affordable fifteen-minute trip from the Old Post Office to O’Hare on battery-powered trains at an average of eighty mph,” reports the Sun-Times. “The $2.25 billion pitch is from veteran Chicago train consultant Mark Walbrun—who led the redesign of Union Station in the 1990s—and fellow cofounders David Lundy, a strategic consultant, and Kristi Lafleur, former director of the Illinois Tollway and former CEO of the Chicago Skyway. “The key to success, they say, is using newly freed-up freight railroad land at a Union Pacific yard on the Near West Side. It’s now possible for a private company to run quick crosstown service—through the West and Northwest sides—with minimal construction on one-hundred percent dedicated tracks, they say. They plan to build a station just west of the Old Post Office, using the long-abandoned tracks under Canal Street.” A forty-five-second promotional video is here. Major Development Planned For Bronzeville Moves Forward “A $70 million mixed-use development planned for Bronzeville—which includes a long-delayed supermarket for a neighborhood short on grocery options—unanimously cleared the city’s planning commission,” reports Block Club. “A 70,000-square-foot Pete’s Fresh Market, plans for which have been in the works for six years, would anchor the development at Pershing Road and State Street at the former Stateway Gardens site. The proposal also includes additional ground-floor retail and 517 residential units, according to developer Zeb McLaurin.” Cortland Street Bridge Could Lose Landmarking After a year of reconstruction with no finish in sight, “I am exploring options to revoke the City Landmark Status of the Cortland Bridge to clear the way for a new one,” writes second ward alder Brian Hopkins in a newsletter. “I have been a champion for historic preservation; however, the city should not be designating critical infrastructure like bridges as landmarks. Period. Ironically, the once first-of-its-kind trunnion bascule bridge—considered a civil engineering masterpiece of the twentieth century—is now inadvertently hampering the growth of this city well into the twenty-first century. There is a way to honor the builders and achievers of yesteryear without negatively affecting the lives, commerce and progress of the city now.” Hublot Opens In Fulton Market Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot has expanded its U.S. retail footprint with a boutique in Fulton Market District, “establishing a presence in the city by helping to shape its economic and ever-growing future. Located within a historic building in the heart of Fulton Market, the 844-square-foot boutique incorporates the building’s original Chicago brick, connecting Hublot’s distinctive design language with the neighborhood’s architectural heritage. The Chicago location marks Hublot’s sixteenth boutique in the United States, and its twentieth in North America.” DINING & DRINKING How Smyth Became North America’s Number One Resto In The Past Decade West Loop fine-dining restaurant Smyth, the only spot in Chicago currently with three Michelin stars, is celebrating ten years in business, reports WBEZ. “In today’s thin-margined restaurant economy, owners John Shields and Karen Urie Shields, the husband-and-wife duo behind Smyth and The Loyalist, have learned a critical lesson: that you can’t run a high-end dining destination without a middle-of-the-road offset. Smyth can’t exist without burger-forward The Loyalist (which opened downstairs, one month before the fine-dining spot more than ten years ago) and vice versa. “When Smyth first opened in 2016, the tasting menu cost $135 per person. A decade later, its tasting menu comes with a price tag that’s more than 200 percent of what it originally cost at $420 per person—all thanks to inflation, food supply chain issues, labor costs and rising prices that impact the restaurant economy.” The Design Behind Pizz’Amici’s Tavern-Style “‘I want people to come here and feel like they’re home,’ says Cecily Federighi, ‘one half of the pizzaiolo couple behind tavern-style hotspot Pizz’Amici,'” writes Surface magazine. To open the restaurant, “the Federighis refurbished a former West Town barbershop, outfitting it with checkered black-and-white hardwood floors, a Carrara marble counter and family photographs dating back to the 1930s, including a shot of Cecily’s grandmother on her wedding day. Behind the bar, a custom painting by artist Muriel Montgomery depicts Billy’s late Uncle Sil—the restaurant’s patron saint—puffing a cig.” More Pizz’amici here. Will Breweries’ THC Drink Boost Be Short-Lived? “State and federal laws taking effect later this year could wipe out the hemp-derived THC beverage market,” slugs Block Club. With the beer industry facing a downturn, “some Chicago craft brewers have tapped into the relatively new category of hemp-derived THC beverages in hopes of boosting their bottom line. Yet these drinks now face an uncertain future, or an end altogether, under state and federal legislation that takes effect toward the end of the year.” The piece includes insights from Ed Marszewski of Marz Community Brewing, Jonathan Fritz of Hopewell Brewing and Josh Deth of Revolution Brewing. FILM & TELEVISION Kartemquin’s “Joffrey: The Next Movement” Dances To PBS Next month, PBS will premiere “Joffrey Ballet: The Next Movement,” a documentary produced by Kartemquin Films that follows the winners of the fourteenth annual Joffrey Ballet’s Grainger Academy of Dance’s “Winning Works” program. “This groundbreaking choreographic competition supports emerging artists in developing and debuting original work and broadens access for artists historically excluded from the art form,” PBS says. The documentary is directed by Cam Be; Stacy Robinson is the executive producer, and Ingrid Roettge, Mar Garvey and Ian Kibbe are producers. The film will premiere on Friday, September 18. Why Do They Make It Hard To Buy Movie Tickets? “Overwhelmed theater apps and a scarcity mindset around exclusive big-screen formats for blockbusters like ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘The Odyssey’ have led to the ‘concertification’ of movies,” reports WIRED. “While directors and studios have embraced such premium screenings for tentpole releases (not least because those tickets are more expensive), the rarity of theaters equipped for them has contributed to a scarcity mindset. People are so bent on experiencing these movies in the ‘best’ possible way, and, if not on opening night, as soon after as possible, that ticket resellers have attempted to auction them off for hundreds of dollars, while some cinephiles have embarked on Homeric journeys to IMAX theaters multiple states away.” Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Theatres, wrote online, “it’s a high-class problem to have such staggering demand, but even so it is intolerable and inexcusable.” He “announced that $2 million in IT costs had been approved in order to ‘fully address the issue.'” Why Paramount Doesn’t Want To Concede Cable Channels To State Attorneys General “The bottom line is that Paramount can’t afford to make any of the concessions the Attorney Generals are asking for without blowing up the underlying economic framework that drives the merger,” writes Rick Ellis at Too Much Television. “Paramount needs a massive cable TV network portfolio in order to generate the short-term revenue it requires to pay down the company’s massive debt. It also needs to be able to strip away as much overlap between Paramount and Warner Brothers’ studio operations as possible. Retaining Warner Brothers as a separate entity drastically lessens the amount of ‘redundancies’ that can be wrung out of the company.” MEDIA Unsealed Murdoch Succession Docs Ripe With “Petty Grievances” Unsealed court documents give a rare glimpse into Rupert Murdoch’s bitter succession battle, reports the Guardian. In the newly released correspondence, Murdoch says “that it would be a disaster if his media empire fell into the ‘wrong hands.'” Murdoch testified at length about his intended legacy, according to the Nevada decision, which he said included preserving Fox and News Corp as what he described as alternative conservative voices in the media. “They were great assets for the family and I thought they were important in the English-speaking world, certainly in the United States,” the now ninety-five-year-old Murdoch said, adding that Fox and News Corp’s voice were “essential for democracies.” MUSIC Dolly Parton Was Eighty Read some profiles.
