Графический калькулятор TI-84 Evo со скидкой 54%: новый процессор и проблемы совместимости

The TI-84 Evo — Texas Instruments' first graphing calculator built on an ARM Cortex processor rather than the Zilog Z80-derived architecture the company used for 35 years — is currently available at Amazon for $74, its lowest price since it launched in April. That is 54% below the standard retail price of $160, saving $86 — and before you decide whether that deal is worth acting on, there is one piece of technical background worth having. You can find the White colorway at its current Amazon listing, independently confirmed by deal-tracking site DealCatcher as recently as August 30. How ARM Cortex Replaced a 35-Year-Old Chip Design Every TI-84 you or your parents used in school ran on a Zilog eZ80 processor — a modernized descendant of the Z80 architecture that dates back to 1976. That chip, clocked at 48 MHz in the TI-84 Plus CE series, did the job, but it came with baggage: an aging toolchain, a separate ARM Cortex-M0+ co-processor to run Python (bolted on in 2021), and a platform that was increasingly difficult to update. The TI-84 Evo abandons that architecture entirely. It runs on an ARM Cortex CPU clocked at 156 MHz — the same processor family powering smartphones and microcontrollers across the industry — and it consolidates both the core calculator functions and the Python interpreter into a single chip. Adafruit's May 2026 writeup on the launch confirmed that this consolidation is what delivers the speed improvement that Texas Instruments describes as "3x faster" than the previous model: the comparison is 156 MHz ARM Cortex versus 48 MHz eZ80, and the Evo's operating system was rebuilt from scratch on the new architecture rather than emulated. A detailed ti84hub comparison and specs breakdown confirms both the clock-speed figures and the OS rebuild. In practice — as ticalc.org's hands-on introduction documented after the calculator hobbyist community got hands-on time with the Evo — the UI is noticeably snappier and the calculator's "Points of Interest" feature (which highlights zeros, maxima, minima, and intersections as you trace a graph) computes almost instantly. Texas Instruments also removed the border around the graphing area without changing the screen's physical 320×240 resolution, giving students 50% more visible graphing space, as confirmed on TI's official product page. One notable detail the community flagged: TI appears to deliberately slow down the actual plotting animation of graphs — not the computation, but the drawing — so students can watch the curve develop rather than see a finished graph appear instantly. Whether that design choice reads as educational scaffolding or unnecessary friction probably depends on whether you are a ninth-grader learning to trace parabolas or an AP Calculus student on a time limit. The ticalc.org hands-on coverage notes this explicitly as a community-observed behavior, not an officially documented specification. What the $74 Deal Actually Means Amazon has been discounting the TI-84 Evo steadily since its April 28, 2026 launch. TI's official press release confirmed the $160 MSRP at launch. The price dropped first to $105, then to $96.99, then to $89, then to $86, and as of August 30 had reached $74 — confirmed by XDA Developers deal coverage when the price first hit this level on August 17 and independently verified by DealCatcher on August 30. At $74, the Evo is significantly cheaper than the TI-84 Plus CE Python was at its typical back-to-school price of $95–$100. For families buying a graphing calculator for the first time, $74 is a genuinely different price point than $160 — it removes the "maybe we should wait" calculation. For families with an existing TI-84 Plus CE that still works, the question is more nuanced. The White colorway has the deepest discount right now. The Evo is also available in Lavender, Mint, Pink, Silver, Teal, and Raspberry. Every retail purchase includes a free four-year license to TI's online calculator page — a browser-based version of the same device that runs on Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS, usable when the physical device is charging. Is the TI-84 Evo Approved for Standardized Tests? Yes, without exception. The TI-84 Evo is approved for the ACT, SAT, IB, and AP exams, as confirmed on TI's official product page. It does not have a Computer Algebra System (CAS) — meaning it cannot perform symbolic algebra or give exact results like simplified radical answers in the way a TI-89 or Casio ClassPad can. That is by design: CAS calculators are prohibited on the SAT and ACT, and the Evo's non-CAS status ensures it is permitted on every major exam a US student is likely to face. The Evo supports Python programming and TI-BASIC, connects to more than 60 Vernier STEM sensors for data-collection labs, per TI's official product page, and handles 14-digit precision across Cartesian functions, parametric expressions, polar expressions, sequences, and conic equations. Specifications at a glance: The device has no Wi-Fi, no social media access, and no notifications — a deliberate design choice that has become increasingly relevant as more than 26 states have enacted laws requiring schools to ban or limit student cell phone use in classrooms. In that environment, a device that does exactly one thing — math — is not a limitation but a feature. What to Know Before Upgrading from a TI-84 Plus CE The ARM Cortex architecture switch brings one significant practical consequence for students who already own a TI-84 Plus CE: TI-BASIC programs written for the older model are not directly compatible with the Evo. The underlying OS was rebuilt, and the way tokens are handled changed enough that programs must be converted. Ticalc.org's hands-on introduction documented this incompatibility after community developers examined the new platform. Community developer "Adriweb" has released a free online converter tool (EvoConv, available via TI-Planet) that handles most programs, but it is an extra step. More broadly, the TI-84 Evo's third-party application and game library is currently much smaller than the TI-84 Plus CE's, which has had a decade of community development behind it. Sites like Cemetech and ticalc.org have begun building Evo-native archives, and ticalc.org notes SourceCoder support was added for TI-84 Evo in May 2026, but if a student relies on any specific community-developed app — a physics formula sheet, a statistics toolkit, a game — they should check whether an Evo-compatible version exists before assuming it will carry over. The Evo also locks out third-party assembly and C programming, continuing the policy TI established in late-model TI-84 Plus CE hardware. For students who are purely using the calculator for coursework, this is invisible. For students who had been using their TI-84 Plus CE as a hobby programming device, it is a material trade-off. If your existing TI-84 Plus CE works fine and you have a library of programs you use, the $74 deal is less obvious as a must-buy than it is for a student getting their first graphing calculator. If you are starting fresh — or if your older device is failing — at $74, the Evo is the clear choice. Is There a Cheaper Alternative Worth Considering? Used TI-84 Plus CE models can still be found for $40–$70, and they retain a broader app ecosystem. The Casio FX-CG100 and HP Prime G2 are viable alternatives — as covered in NotebookCheck's back-to-school review, the Casio uses AAA batteries for quick replenishment and offers rounded-top keys; the HP Prime G2 has a touchscreen. But the TI-84 series remains what most US math teachers use in instruction and what most school supply lists specify, and that practical reality matters when it comes to classroom familiarity. Frequently Asked Questions Is the TI-84 Evo worth buying at $74? For students getting their first graphing calculator, yes — at $74, it is roughly half the $160 retail price, it is approved for every major standardized test, and it is built on genuinely current hardware (ARM Cortex at 156 MHz) rather than a 35-year-old chip architecture. For students upgrading from a working TI-84 Plus CE, the calculus is more nuanced: TI-BASIC programs from the older device are not directly compatible, and the third-party app library is still growing. If your current device works and you have programs you rely on, check app compatibility before switching. What is the technical difference between the TI-84 Evo and the TI-84 Plus CE? The most significant change is the processor architecture. The TI-84 Plus CE ran on a Zilog eZ80 chip at 48 MHz with a separate ARM co-processor to handle Python. The TI-84 Evo replaces both with a single ARM Cortex CPU running at 156 MHz, with the entire operating system rebuilt from scratch on the new architecture. That is why the Evo is roughly 3x faster in UI navigation and instant calculation — and why older TI-84 Plus CE programs require conversion before they will run on the Evo. Does the TI-84 Evo support Python, and can I use it in AP classes and on the SAT? Yes and yes. The Evo supports Python programming natively alongside TI-BASIC, and it connects to more than 60 Vernier sensors for lab data collection. It is approved for the ACT, SAT, AP, and IB exams. It does not include a Computer Algebra System (CAS), which is the feature that would get it banned from the SAT and ACT — so its approval is comprehensive across all major standardized exams US students take. Will the older programs and games I had on my TI-84 Plus CE work on the Evo? Not automatically. Because the Evo runs on an entirely new ARM-based operating system, TI-BASIC programs from the TI-84 Plus CE must be converted using a community-built tool (EvoConv by Adriweb, available via TI-Planet) before they can run on the Evo. Third-party assembly and C programs — including many games — are not supported on the Evo at all, and the community library of Evo-native apps is still much smaller than what existed for the CE. If you depended on specific programs, verify their Evo compatibility before upgrading. Prices and availability are subject to change.
