В Лос-Анджелесе откроются три выставки работ родившегося в Комптоне художника Реджи Ходжеса

Three Los Angeles arts institutions will present concurrent exhibitions of new works by Compton-born painter Reggie Burrows Hodges this fall, marking the artist’s first solo museum exhibitions in Southern California, officials announced Tuesday. The J. Paul Getty Museum, California African American Museum and Art + Practice will open the exhibitions Oct. 20, with works largely inspired by paintings in the Getty’s collection. Hodges, 61, creates paintings exploring memory, labor and power, often depicting intimate and everyday moments. His new works draw on Old Master paintings while incorporating his own experiences and artistic style, according to organizers. “Reggie Burrows Hodges is an exceptional artist recognized internationally for his ingenuity and deeply passionate visual storytelling,” Getty Museum Director Timothy Potts said. “We are delighted to be partnering with CAAM and Art + Practice to display his newest work and first solo museum presentations in the city where he was born and raised.” “Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Passions” will be displayed in the Getty Museum’s East Pavilion through Feb. 28. The exhibition features five paintings examining themes of violence and theatricality found in three 17th-century Italian works from the Getty collection by Orazio Gentileschi and his daughter, Artemisia Gentileschi. At CAAM in Exposition Park, “Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Miracles” will also run through Feb. 28. The exhibition includes works influenced by Old Master paintings, including Jacopo Bassano’s 16th-century “The Miracle of the Quail,” which will be displayed alongside Hodges’ work. Art + Practice in Leimert Park will present “Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Dreams” through Feb. 27. The exhibition features new paintings influenced by Hodges’ childhood memories of Compton, the legacy of Leimert Park and his travels in Europe. “The meaning of artwork shifts depending on how and where it is shown, and each venue in the collaboration offers a distinct entry point to Hodges’ practice,” CAAM Executive Director Cameron Shaw said. The Getty Center will host a free public lecture Oct. 27 featuring Hodges in conversation with exhibition curators Davide Gasparotto and Bridget R. Cooks. A reception and an opportunity to view the Getty exhibition will follow. Hodges has previously had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Parrish Art Museum, Addison Gallery of American Art and Center for Maine Contemporary Art, among other institutions.
