I am writing this week’s column from sunny Florida, where I am enjoying a much-needed vacation with my wife and kids!
Working in Parks & Recreation, getting away during the heart of the summer is pretty much impossible. Between summer camps, pools, concerts, special events, and everything else we have going on, summer is definitely our busiest time of year. So, if we are going to squeeze in a summer vacation, it usually has to happen at the very end, right before the kids head back to school.
We are staying in the Tampa area and have been having a great time. There has been plenty of beach and pool time, which has been very relaxing. We also took in a Tampa Bay Rays game while they were playing the Mets. As most people who know me are aware, I am a Yankees fan, but for one night I found myself rooting for the Mets since the Rays are ahead of the Yankees in the standings. Sometimes you have to put your differences aside for the greater good!
We also took an airboat ride and saw plenty of alligators, which was a really cool experience. We were also able to spend some quality family time with my brother and his family, who live down here. They own a condo right on the beach and were nice enough to let us stay there. We are on the third floor overlooking the ocean, and one of my favorite parts of the trip has simply been sitting on the balcony, watching the water and listening to the waves crash on the shore. There are definitely worse ways to spend a morning!
Another highlight of the trip was going to Topgolf. I am not a very good golfer, but I can hit the ball pretty far. The only problem is I don’t always know where it is going.
Unfortunately, I quickly learned that hitting the ball far doesn’t necessarily help you win at Topgolf. You actually have to hit the targets to score points. Apparently, accuracy matters!
So there I was, crushing golf balls a mile while my wife and my 10-year-old daughter, Gabriella, were hitting little ground balls that kept rolling into the targets and scoring points. Meanwhile, my two sons and I were getting increasingly frustrated as we continued losing to the girls, who just kept peppering the targets. It was a humbling experience for the men of the Veronesi family!
Despite the loss, we all had a great time, and overall, it has been a wonderful vacation and a great opportunity to spend time together before the kids head back to school.
While I have been enjoying a little time away, we still have plenty happening back home with the Town of Clarkstown Parks & Recreation Department.
On Saturday, September 19th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., we will be hosting a Tag Sale at Germonds Park. This is a great opportunity to clean out your house, make a few dollars, and pass along some of your treasures to someone else who can take them home and store them for the next 15 years!
Spaces are $30, and participants must bring their own tables. So start going through those closets, basements, garages, and attics now. You may be surprised by what you find, or, in my experience, you may wonder why you have been holding onto some of it for the past 20 years!
In addition to the Tag Sale, we will also be hosting a Touch-A-Truck event that same day. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., kids will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at police vehicles, fire trucks, construction equipment, and more. They will even have the opportunity to climb inside some of the vehicles and see what they are like from the driver’s seat. It should be a great event for families and especially for kids who love big trucks!
We also still have a few tickets remaining for our bus trip to Sight & Sound Theatres to see JOSHUA on Friday, September 11th. The bus will leave Clarkstown Parks & Recreation at 8:00 a.m. There will be time to enjoy lunch in Amish Country before the 3:00 p.m. show, and we expect to return to Clarkstown by approximately 11:30 p.m.
It is definitely a long day, but well worth it. Sight & Sound puts on incredible productions, and if you have never experienced one of their shows before, this is a great opportunity to do so.
As always, if you have an idea for a future column, program, event, trip, or something you would like to see offered by Clarkstown Parks & Recreation, I would love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at [email protected].
Have a great week!
