Остров Саут-Кейкос получил первые прямые рейсы из Нью-Йорка

This Tiny Caribbean Island Is Getting Its First-Ever Flights From the New York Area Tiny South Caicos is getting its first-ever nonstop flights from the New York area this winter, with BermudAir launching twice-weekly Newark service Dec. 20, a 3.5-hour trip with fares starting at $347. The small Caribbean island of South Caicos is getting its first-ever nonstop flights from the New York area, opening a direct connection between one of the Caribbean’s smallest resort islands and the biggest metropolitan market in the United States. BermudAir will begin flying from Newark Liberty International Airport on Dec. 20, with the trip scheduled at about 3.5 hours, Caribbean Journal has learned. The seasonal flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays through April 25, with introductory fares starting at $347 one way and $773 roundtrip. The new route will link Newark directly with South Caicos International Airport, giving the eight-square-mile island its second nonstop gateway from the mainland United States. It is a remarkable change for a place that, until recently, had no nonstop flights from the United States at all. South Caicos has spent generations feeling far removed even from the better-known corners of Turks and Caicos, an island of historic salinas, fishing boats, bonefishing flats and long stretches of white sand. Now a New Yorker will be able to board a plane at Newark and step onto South Caicos about 3.5 hours later. The island will still feel remote when you arrive, but getting there will no longer require a connection through Providenciales or another gateway. A Tiny Island That Is Suddenly Much Easier to Reach South Caicos is very different from Providenciales, the country’s established tourism center. Provo has Grace Bay Beach, a large collection of luxury resorts and villas and nonstop flights from cities across North America, while South Caicos remains smaller, quieter and much less developed. That contrast is the reason the new service is so compelling. The flight brings one of the Caribbean’s biggest source markets directly to an island whose appeal still comes largely from how removed it feels. South Caicos measures a little more than eight square miles. Its landscape is marked by old salt ponds, bluffs, beaches and turquoise water, while the island’s history remains closely tied to both salt production and fishing. Tourism has traditionally operated at a much smaller scale here than on Providenciales. The arrival of a major Marriott resort and new international flights, however, is giving South Caicos a far more prominent place on the Turks and Caicos travel map. The new BermudAir service will also have an unusually large effect on the island’s international flight schedule. The carrier says its two weekly Newark flights will increase scheduled international frequency to South Caicos from two flights per week to four during the winter season. That is a substantial increase for an island this small. It means the New York route is not simply another flight option; it represents a meaningful expansion of South Caicos’ overall international connectivity. The Flight That Changes the New York Trip The schedule works naturally for a resort vacation. BermudAir will operate Newark-South Caicos flights every Thursday and Sunday, creating easy three-night, four-night and weeklong trip patterns. A Thursday departure and Sunday return gives you a long weekend. A Sunday flight down and Thursday flight home creates a four-night stay without connecting in either direction. The approximately 3.5-hour flying time is another important part of the route. South Caicos may feel like one of the more remote islands in the region, but it will soon take less time to fly there from Newark than many people expect from a Caribbean trip. The service is scheduled to continue through April 25, covering the heart of the winter and early spring travel season. BermudAir will operate the flights aboard its Embraer E190 aircraft. Introductory fares start at $347 one way, according to the airline. Roundtrip fares begin at $773, although pricing will depend on the dates and available inventory. The service remains subject to government approval. BermudAir has already put the route on sale, with the Dec. 20 launch date displayed in its schedule. South Caicos Has Been Building Toward This The Newark flight comes after a rapid period of growth in South Caicos airlift. American Airlines launched the island’s first-ever nonstop service from the United States with flights from Miami, transforming how visitors from the mainland could reach the destination. That route gave South Caicos a direct U.S. connection for the first time. Newark now adds another major source market and, more importantly, brings nonstop service to the island from the Northeast. The Miami service itself was closely linked to the arrival of a major new resort. Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa opened as a 100-room resort on South Caicos, putting Marriott’s Luxury Collection on an island that had previously had a much smaller hotel profile. Salterra occupies 85 beachfront acres and fronts a 3,000-foot stretch of white sand. The resort is about 10 minutes from South Caicos International Airport, making the new Newark journey especially simple once the plane lands. The resort has 100 ocean-facing rooms and suites, along with six food and beverage concepts and an extensive spa program. Its design and experiences draw heavily on the island’s salt-making history and marine environment. The hotel’s arrival helped give South Caicos a new kind of international visibility. Caribbean Journal called the opening a major moment for the tiny island, particularly because it coincided with the expansion of direct U.S. airlift. Salterra also played a role in the new BermudAir route. The airline says the Newark service grew out of an initiative led by the resort, which will offer stay packages aligned with the Thursday and Sunday flight schedule. So what about prices? I found rates for about $664 per night right now on Marriott’s portal. A Different Kind of Turks and Caicos Vacation The biggest reason to choose South Caicos may be that it does not resemble the Turks and Caicos vacation many people already know. Providenciales has spent decades developing into one of the Caribbean’s leading luxury destinations, while South Caicos remains far more sparsely built. There are no long strips of major resorts here. Days are more likely to revolve around the sea, the beach, fishing, diving or simply the space that comes with being on a small island with relatively little development. South Caicos is particularly well known for bonefishing. The surrounding flats, reefs and cays have long made the island attractive to anglers and divers, even before it began receiving direct international flights. Its salt history is visible across the landscape. Old salinas remain one of the island’s defining features, reminders of the industry that helped shape South Caicos long before luxury tourism arrived. The beaches are part of the experience, too. East Bay and the areas surrounding the island’s resorts have the pale sand and vivid blue water associated with Turks and Caicos, but with a markedly different atmosphere from Grace Bay. There is another established luxury resort on the island as well. Sailrock South Caicos opened years before Salterra, with a collection of suites and villas set across a large residential resort community. Sailrock helped introduce South Caicos as a luxury resort destination long before nonstop U.S. flights arrived. Its villas, beaches and residential component remain another reason the new Newark route matters beyond a single hotel. The combination of Sailrock and Salterra means South Caicos now has two distinct high-end resort options. One helped establish the destination; the other has been central to its newest wave of international attention. BermudAir Is Expanding Across Turks and Caicos South Caicos is only one part of BermudAir’s broader expansion in Turks and Caicos. The airline is also launching a substantial network of new service to Providenciales from markets across the United States and Canada. Newark is part of that network as well. BermudAir will offer service from the New York area to both Providenciales and South Caicos, giving passengers a choice between two very different versions of the destination. Its Providenciales expansion also includes flights from Boston, Baltimore-Washington, Raleigh-Durham, Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg/Tampa and Toronto. Most of the routes begin during the winter season, while Fort Lauderdale service starts Oct. 26. The South Caicos flight is different because it creates an entirely new nonstop market. No airline currently links the New York area directly with the island. “Now New Yorkers can fly nonstop to two distinct sides of the Turks and Caicos Islands,” BermudAir founder and CEO Adam Scott said. That distinction captures the new choice created by the airline’s expansion. Someone searching for the familiar Turks and Caicos experience can fly to Providenciales, while someone looking for a smaller island can fly directly to South Caicos. The Airport Is Part of the Story South Caicos’ airport has also been central to the island’s tourism growth. The facility underwent a major redevelopment before the arrival of direct U.S. service, helping make the new generation of international routes possible. The airport’s proximity to the island’s resorts is one of its practical advantages. Salterra is about 10 minutes away, meaning the transfer after a 3.5-hour flight from Newark is exceptionally short. That matters on a four-day trip. The less time spent moving between airports, planes and ground transfers, the more viable South Caicos becomes as a quick Caribbean escape rather than a destination reserved for longer stays. Regional flying remains important, too. interCaribbean Airways has expanded its South Caicos service, maintaining connections between the island and Providenciales and giving passengers another route into the destination. That regional connection remains useful for anyone combining South Caicos with another Turks and Caicos island. The Newark flight simply adds a much more direct option for visitors whose trip begins in the New York metropolitan area. Which Turks and Caicos Island Is Right for You? Providenciales remains the natural choice if you want the broadest possible resort selection, a large collection of restaurants and beach clubs and the famous setting of Grace Bay. Its much larger air network also makes it easier to reach from more cities. South Caicos is the choice if getting away from the larger tourism centers is the point. Its hotel scene is compact, its pace is slower and the island still feels much closer to the fishing and salt-producing heritage that defined it for generations. Salterra makes sense if you want a full-service Marriott luxury resort with a major spa, multiple restaurants and a direct connection to the island’s natural and cultural history. Sailrock offers a different experience built around villas, suites and a large residential resort setting. The new Newark flight makes both significantly easier to reach from the Northeast. A trip that once meant landing on Providenciales and changing planes can now begin and end with a single nonstop. South Caicos Is About to Feel Much Closer The most interesting thing about the new route is the contrast it creates. South Caicos is still a tiny island of a little more than eight square miles, and its appeal still comes from beaches, salinas, fishing grounds and the sense that you have gone somewhere genuinely removed. Beginning Dec. 20, the island will be about 3.5 hours from Newark twice each week. A place that only recently received its first nonstop U.S. flight will suddenly have direct air service from both Miami and the New York area. That is an extraordinary amount of change in a short period for one of the smallest islands in Turks and Caicos. It also gives New Yorkers something they have never had before: a nonstop flight straight to South Caicos. The island at the other end will remain the same compact, quiet corner of the Caribbean. It will simply be much closer.
