Исторические события: сестра-монахиня введет йогу в католическую общину и пожар в тюрьме штата Вашингтон

This day in history: Walla Walla prison burned. Nun taught yoga at Our Lady of Lourdes From 1976: Sister Paul Crownover, of the Sisters of Providence, was teaching an innovative class: “Christian yoga.” Some people were asking her: Did the pope know she was doing that? Sister Paula answered by saying she had the support of her religious order, and also that she believed that she was teaching more religion through yoga than she ever taught through formal religious education programs. The public was responding. She had as many as 150 people enrolled in her classes at the Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Cathedral in Spokane. “Sister Paula has convinced me a person can be a better Christian because of it,” said senior pastor Rev. Bernard L. Schiller. Sister Paula was originally from Dixie, Washington, and was involved in dance and theater before joining her order. Yoga, she said, puts people in touch “with themselves, their world, with others, with God.” From 1926: A fire destroyed the main prison building at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, and about 975 convicts were marched out to spend the night in the open, “where ball games are played.” The building contained the cell blocks of “all convicts of the state penitentiary.” “The fire, which was spectacular, was started, it is believed, by convicts since it was first seen in the roof of cell wing No. 5 and spread rapidly through the building,” said The Spokesman-Review. “… Prison officials devoted their time to guarding the convicts which, with enormous crowds milling around close to the penitentiary grounds, might have been dangerous.” Army tents and blankets were being sent from Camp Murray to house the inmates until other arrangements could be made. “Some convicts were overheard to express a wish that the whole institution would burn,” said the SR.
