This day in history: Fairchild partakes as air support in mock war with 17,000 troops. Bootlegger apprehended in chase From 1976: Fairchild Air Force Base was the air support nerve center for a “war” involving 17,000 troops. It was a mock war, named Exercise Brave Shield, and most of the troops were roaming the Yakima Firing Range in central Washington. Yet Fairchild’s command post was coordinating “airlift supply support” for the troops in the field. “The roar of electrical generators pervades the command center of large olive drab tents, covered with expanses of camouflage netting,” the Spokane Chronicle wrote. From 1926: John Jensen, 58, alleged bootlegger, was running down Riverside Avenue in an attempt to escape from a police sergeant. The sergeant, nearly a block away, pulled his gun and fired twice. Jensen swerved and fell, with a bullet wound in his leg below the knee. Jensen was now in city jail on liquor charges. It all began at 1 a.m. when the sergeant saw two women emerge from the Modern Bar, 4 W. Riverside Ave., arousing his suspicions. He entered the bar and found Jensen walking through with three pints of moonshine. The officer confiscated the bottles and was escorting Jensen to the police call box on Riverside Avenue when Jensen tried to flee. The bullet passed through his calf but did little damage.
