The National Corvette Museum cruises into its 32nd year
The National Corvette Museum marked its 32nd anniversary with a packed weekend of cars, crowds and celebration, using a new collections facility and a campus full of history to show how the Corvette story keeps growing in Bowling Green.
Ryan Eichler, the museum’s director of marketing and communications, said the anniversary gives visitors more than a reason to stop by. He said it brings people back into the museum’s orbit, reconnecting them with the brand’s history and the people who helped build it.
“People come here because Corvette means something to them, and this anniversary gives them another reason to reconnect with that story,” Eichler said.
The museum’s biggest new addition is a 66,000-square-foot collections facility that opened in August 2026 after board approval in January 2025. Eichler said the project moved from idea to reality through months of planning, construction and careful car moving.
“The new building gives us room to grow, but more importantly it gives us a place to protect the cars, artifacts and stories that make Corvette history matter,” Eichler said.
The anniversary also underscored how the museum has grown from a small storefront collection into a major destination. Eichler said the museum opened in 1994 after beginning with documents about Corvette history and expanded again in 2009. He said the latest chapter adds to a long record of growth.
“After 32 years, it’s rewarding to see how far the museum has come and how much more there is to still build,” Eichler said.
For visitors, the celebration mixed nostalgia with spectacle. Victor Erickson of Owensboro said the most memorable part of his visit was seeing the cars that survived the sinkhole preserved inside the museum. He said the display gave him a new appreciation for the museum’s resilience and for how it tells the Corvette story through more than polished show cars.
The sinkhole became one of the museum’s defining moments when the floor opened up in 2014 and swallowed eight Corvettes. Since then, the museum has turned the disaster into part of its story, preserving some of the damaged cars and using the site to show how the museum recovered and kept moving forward.
“Seeing the cars that came out of the sinkhole made the museum feel even more real to me,” Erickson said. “That was the part that stood out the most.”
Nick Basilotto, who traveled from St. Petersburg, Florida, to debut his 1964 split window conversion, said the anniversary also reflects the people who keep Corvette culture alive. To him, the event felt like a reunion of people who care deeply about the cars, the history and the community around them.
The split-window Corvette traces back to the 1963 model, when the design briefly featured a divided rear window that quickly became one of the car’s most recognizable details. The style was dropped the following year, making the 1963 version a standout for collectors and inspiring custom builds like Basilotto’s 1964 conversion.
“For me, the anniversary is really about the people who keep coming back and keep the Corvette community strong,” Basilotto said. “That’s what gives the club its life.”
Mitchell Rabold-Pearson, motorsports and group sales director for the Bowling Green Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the museum remains one of Bowling Green’s strongest tourism draws. He said Corvette gives the city an identity that reaches far beyond the museum walls and keeps visitors coming back for more.
The Bowling Green Convention and Visitors Bureau works to bring travelers into the city and connect them with local attractions, events and businesses. The bureau promotes Bowling Green as a destination for motorsports, group travel, meetings and sports tournaments, helping turn major events like the Corvette Museum anniversary into an economic boost for the community.
“People plan trips around the Corvette Museum because it’s such a unique stop for car fans and casual visitors alike,” Rabold-Pearson said.
Rabold-Pearson said the anniversary also sends people looking for more of Bowling Green once they leave the museum. He pointed to Lost River Cave as one of the city’s most reliable recommendations, especially during the summer heat.
Eichler said the museum’s next big step comes in 2027, when public tours of the new collections facility are expected to begin. He said the tours will deepen the visitor experience while also helping fund the museum’s mission.
“We’re trying to build on the momentum here and keep giving visitors new reasons to come back,” Eichler said. “That growth is tied to how we preserve Corvette history and serve the people who support the museum.”
Eichler said the museum’s appeal stretches far beyond die-hard car fans. In his view, Corvette is a story about engineering, style, American ambition and the way a car became part of the country’s culture.
Eichler’s connection to Corvette started in 1994, when he toured the museum and the Bowling Green plant with his father and saw a Western Kentucky University public relations intern leading the visit. He said that experience showed him he could build a career in public relations around cars, and it pushed him toward the path that eventually brought him back to the museum.
For now, the museum is leaning on the anniversary energy and the steady number of visitors who come for the cars and stay for the stories. Eichler said the mix is exactly what keeps the museum moving forward.
“We want people to leave with something new each time they come through,” Eichler said. “That’s what keeps the museum feeling alive.”
