Поэт Джим Дэниэлс представил новую книгу о жизни рабочих семей Детройта и Великих озер

The Great Lakes as the coordinates of the heart: poet Jim Daniels on poetry of Detroit and Michigan Capital News Service LANSING — The American Rust Belt is often described through statistics, manufacturing output, employment rates and economic downturns. For Jim Daniels, however, the region is defined by people, working families, factory neighborhoods, highways leading north toward the Great Lakes and memories that stay with a person for a lifetime. These themes run throughout his new poetry collection, “Late Invocation for Magic” (Michigan State University Press, $24.95). The volume brings together about 20 new poems alongside selected work from the past several decades. “The last new and selected collection I published was in 2003, and since then I’ve brought out about eight more poetry books,” Daniels said. “Many of them were published by small independent presses and are no longer in print. It seemed important to gather the last 20-plus years of my work under one cover.” Unlike many poets who organize selected editions by individual books, Daniels chose a different approach. Instead of grouping poems collection by collection, he mixed work from different periods so that poems written years apart could enter into conversation with one another. “I wanted to place poems written 15 or 20 years apart next to each other if they explored similar themes – work, family, memory and the places that shaped me as a person,” he said. Among those places are Detroit, other industrial cities of the Rust Belt and the landscapes of Michigan. Although Daniels has spent most of his adult life in Pittsburgh, his experience growing up in industrial Michigan remains a primary source of creative inspiration. Images of factory suburbs, highways leading north and the shores of the Great Lakes appear throughout the collection. He is a professor emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University and teaches in the MFA program at Alma College. Daniels was born in Detroit and raised in Warren, a city closely tied to the automotive industry. His childhood and adolescence unfolded in a world where many families organized their lives around factory shifts. While attending college, he worked at the same Ford axle plant where his father had worked. It was there that he began thinking about how deeply work shapes life beyond the workplace. “In our city, there really was not a traditional downtown,” Daniels recalled. “Life revolved around the auto plants, which set the rhythm of work and daily life for entire families.” “Almost everyone in my neighborhood worked in manufacturing, and when I found myself on the assembly line, I started to better understand the lives of my father, my friend, and my neighbors.” That experience later became the foundation for much of his writing. At the center of his work are residents of Detroit’s industrial suburbs whose everyday lives were inseparable from factory labor. According to Daniels, his interest in these subjects comes not only from personal experience but also from his belief that working-class life and industrial communities are often underrepresented in contemporary poetry. “It felt important to say that these stories matter, that these lives matter,” he said. “I wanted to bring them to the surface with specificity and respect, while recognizing how difficult this work was and how deeply it shaped people’s lives.” “No matter what your profession is, you cannot simply come home and leave your work at the door.” One of the most personal poems in the collection is “My Father Worked 800 Hours of Overtime.” His father spent long hours at an auto plant, putting in extra hours to support a family of five children. “My father died in January of this year, and even late in life he often talked about how much of our childhood he missed,” Daniels said. “The factory made it possible to support a family, but it also took away time, health and the ability to be present with the people you love. You spent the entire day doing repetitive work, then came home and immediately had to become a father or mother to your children.” “That’s a very difficult switch to make.” The impact of work beyond the factory gates and the way it shapes families across generations remains one of the central themes of Daniels’ writing. “When I was growing up, I literally did not know the names of trees,” he said. “I knew there were Christmas trees and what I thought of as ‘trees with leaves.’ We were cut off from the natural world in those concrete neighborhoods.” He argues that such an environment shaped not only people’s relationship with nature but also their sense of self. In neighborhoods where houses looked alike and many residents worked similar jobs, questions of individuality often became especially important. In Daniels’ poetry, Michigan is more than a place of factories and industrial districts. The landscapes of the Great Lakes, the forests of northern Michigan and Interstate 75 –which for many residents serves as the road to recreation and escape –also occupy an important place in his work. “For many of the people I grew up with, the dream was to own a cottage somewhere in Northern Michigan, near a lake where you could fish and simply relax,” Daniels said. At the same time, Daniels does not see his perspective on the city as the definitive one. “Someone once told me that the Detroit in my poems was not the Detroit they knew.” “And I agreed. Everyone has their own Detroit. These are my Detroit stories, and you can write your own. No one sees the world in exactly the same way,” he said. Daniels has always tried to write poetry that is clear and accessible, pushing back against the idea that poetry is meant only for a narrow literary audience. “I want people who read my poetry to feel something. I want to show them my world. I love writing that creates an emotional response not just an intellectual one, but a human one,” Daniels said. For him, poetry begins not with explanation but with an emotional connection between writer and reader. This year, Daniels received the Michigan Author Award, one of the state’s highest literary honors. The recognition is especially meaningful because so much of his work remains rooted in Michigan. The world he invites readers into still begins there among factory suburbs, highways leading to the Great Lakes and people whose stories deserve to be heard. In his essay collection “In the Ignorance of Trees,” Daniels also explores how life amid concrete and industrial landscapes can distance people from the natural world. The book was selected as a Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. Kyrmyzy Turebayeva writes for Great Lakes Echo.
