The City of North Bay takes over Laurentian Ski Hill for three-year term Article content The City of North Bay now owns Laurentian Ski Hill. Council approved a three-year lease and operating agreement with the Laurentian Ski Hill and Snowboarding Club, formalizing the club’s operation of Laurentian Ski Hill and its snowboarding facilities. Recommended Videos North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico said the purchase provides stability for an important North Bay asset. “Stability to operate and move forward with the programs, to know the City of North Bay supports what this volunteer board continues to do on a year over year basis. The ski hill is an important asset for the city and that’s one of the reasons why we purchased it,” he told The Nugget following Tuesday’s council meeting. There have been times in the past where the city almost lost the ski hill, Chirico said “this ensures that doesn’t happen.” “The City of North Bay is basically backstopping the ski hill as one of our assets just like our arenas, sports fields. This is an important one, in economic development and in the attraction of professionals to our community. Certainly having a ski hill right in the middle of our city is an amazing thing to have, very few communities in the province have that type of facility.” The agreement follows the city’s purchase of approximately 50 hectares of land from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority earlier this year, including the ski hill and related buildings and facilities. https://www.nugget.ca/news/north-bay-council-eyes-takeover-of-laurentian-ski-hill It maintains Laurentian Ski Hill as a community and regional recreational asset and ensures continued public access to the property and facilities. The city will continue to own the land, buildings and municipal assets associated with the ski hill. The club will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility, including programming and staffing. The city will remain at arm’s length from the club’s operations while maintaining oversight of city-owned assets. Under the agreement, the club will pay the city an annual lease fee of $32,500. The city will provide the same financial support it has provided previously through the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, including an annual operating subsidy of $60,000, a capital subsidy of $65,000 and a $100,000 contingency subsidy. The club will provide information to the city each year on its finances and business plans. The ski hill is considered to be an important recreational asset for North Bay and the region. The agreement aims to ensure it remains available to the community and that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy it. “Our team at the Laurentian Ski Hill and Snowboarding Club is thrilled to continue providing exceptional skiing, snowboarding, and on-hill recreational activities to the people of North Bay,” said Executive Director Duncan Cornthwaite. “We look forward to working closely with the city and our many valued stakeholders to ensure a vibrant and active future for our community.” Chirico said the hill is a four-season destination and work is underway to capitalize on what the facility has to offer. “It’s certainly the mission of the board to make it a four-season attraction. It’s amazing the number of people who utilize those trail systems during the summer,” the mayor said, adding there’s unlimited potential for Laurentian Ski Hill.
