The Ayurveda Co. (TAC), the ayurvedic beauty and personal care brand that once scaled to more than Rs 150 crore in annual gross merchandise value, is shutting down, founder Shreedha Singh Bhargava has announced.
In a LinkedIn post, Bhargava revealed that operations at the company stopped in July last year, its assets have since been liquidated, and the business is now being formally wound up.
"The brand has been inactive since, and I'd rather say this out loud than let it quietly disappear," she wrote.
Founded by Bhargava and Param Bhargava, TAC positioned itself as a modern Ayurveda brand aimed at younger consumers. Over a span of four to five years, the company expanded rapidly, building a retail and online presence across India while employing more than 1,000 people across on-roll and off-roll roles.
Reflecting on the company's growth, Bhargava said the numbers alone do not define the journey.
"It is difficult to reduce all that I feel into a post, but in that 4-5 year sprint with brutally expedited learnings, TAC scaled to Rs 150+ crore in annual GMV, built a team of 1,000+ people across on-roll & off-roll roles, established a significant retail + online presence & reached consumers across the country."
The founder also offered a candid account of the challenges that ultimately led to the company's closure.
Bhargava said she and her co-founder made significant personal sacrifices in an attempt to keep the business running, including mortgaging family property and going without salaries for more than a year.
"Param & I fought very, very hard to keep the boat afloat," she wrote.
"From mortgaging our parental property to not withdrawing salaries for over a year, I don't even want to get started on the crazy belief we had that somehow, one day, we would turn it around."
She added that the pressure took a heavy toll.
"We pushed ourselves way beyond our physical & mental limits, there were breakdowns. That kind of irrational, stubborn belief is probably both the superpower & the peril of being an entrepreneur."
In her assessment of what went wrong, Bhargava pointed to aggressive expansion and premature senior hiring.
"We expanded too fast, too wide, & way too many senior folks too early, before the system was ready," she said.
"As a founder, you want the absolute best for your brand & everyone associated with it but sometimes that ambition runs ahead of what the business can sustainably support."
Bhargava said she has repeatedly revisited key decisions in search of a turning point that might have changed the company's trajectory.
"I've post-mortemed every significant & small decision gazillion times over, trying to figure out which one could've been the inflection point for a different outcome."
While acknowledging mistakes, she said she remains proud of what the team built.
"I take full responsibility for what did not work, and I am still incredibly proud of what we built together."
As she formally closes the chapter on TAC, Bhargava expressed gratitude to employees, investors, partners, customers and mentors who supported the business through its journey.
She also thanked several colleagues and her sibling, Atharva Singh, for standing by her during the company's highs and lows.
"As I close this chapter, I am deeply grateful for the people who trusted us, built with us, challenged us, backed us & stayed with us. These memories are etched in my heart."
Bhargava said she is now exploring what comes next.
"As I close this chapter, I'm exploring what my next purpose looks like."
