В Фриленде покажут исторический фильм «Слезы завтра» в рамках празднования 150-летия муниципалитета

“Tears for Tomorrow,” a feature-length film made in Freeland in the 1950s, will be shown on Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. in the borough building as part of the celebration of the borough’s 150th anniversary. Local historian Bobby Maso will introduce the film and tell about the men who formed Popular Pictures during a program called “Freeland Meets Hollywood.” Popular Pictures took its name from Popular Drive-in theater that opened in 1949 between Freeland and White Haven. J.T. Yurishin, the drive-in owner and protectionist, joined with movie-lovers Charles Stumpf, Al Danko, Tom Landers, William Doynics, manager of Refowich Theater, and Stanley Potoskie, the projectionist at the Refowich, to form Popular Pictures and make three movies. “These guys didn’t want to just be projectionists,” Maso said. “All the guys had regular daytime jobs. This was their passion. They chased it has hard as they could.” Maso tried to track down a copy of “Tears for Tomorrow” from out-of-town relatives of the filmmakers, a defunct distribution firm and the Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe before learning that Freeland resident Frank Balon had made a DVD from an old VHS tape. “After all these we found the answer on Centre Street in Freeland. It made me smile. We solved the problem in-house,” Maso said. “Freeland meets Hollywood” is the last of the preliminary events leading to the four-day celebration of the borough’s anniversary, which will be held Sept. 10 to 13 in Freeland Public Park with special Masses and events at other locations.
