TBI hiring special agents for new task force in Memphis MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is actively hiring 32 agents for the “Tennessee Safe Initiative” task force. A new state law took effect July 1 which created the statewide task force aimed at deciding when and where Tennessee launches extra law enforcement operations. Under the task force, investigators can now operate in a judicial district even without a request from the local District Attorney, according to the law’s summary on the Tennessee General Assembly’s website. “Not only go around me but go around any of the 32 DA’s in Tennessee. Now, it is limited to serious crime, sex offenses, violent offenses, things of that nature, gang related offenses,” said Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. The statewide task force is chaired by the TBI director, along with the Safety Commissioner and appointed district attorneys, sheriffs, and police chiefs. It’s a total of eight members that decide when crime in a jurisdiction is so prevalent that it threatens public safety and additional ‘Safe Initiative’ operations are needed. “Decided that the first task, first mission, the first deployment of this new thing will be here in Memphis and Shelby County. I don’t think it will be the only one,” said Mulroy. Mulroy said TBI has been authorized to hire 32 new agents. TBI is already actively recruiting those agents and hosting a virtual recruitment fair in Memphis on July 29th, according to a post made on the organizations Facebook account. Mulroy noted that TBI has been authorized to hire around the same amount of recruits every year by the state for the past several years. “I doubt very seriously that all 32 of them will be deployed to Memphis. I doubt that the deployment, you know, will last indefinitely. You know, it could be some number of months, half a year,” said Mulroy. Mulroy said he welcomes help from TBI stating it will only benefit Memphis and Shelby County. “I will not, I will not begrudge them,” said Mulroy. “It can’t replace local law enforcement, that’s the first line of defense, but to supplement it in a cooperative manner, which is what I expect to happen, absolutely.” Action News 5 did reach out to TBI for an interview.
