Видовая церемония: прощание с Тассосом Ревисом, спасшим архивы истории греков в Австралии

On Thursday 10 September, relatives and friends will gather at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in South Yarra to say goodbye to Anastasios “Tassos” Revis. Some will talk about the successful businessman. Of the philanthropist. Of the man who generously supported the Greek Community of Melbourne and the people and institutions of the community. But there is another story worth remembering. A story that concerns the entire Greek community. It is the story of the Dardalis Archives and the personal battle waged by Tassos Revis to ensure that an invaluable piece of the historical memory of Hellenism in Australia would not be lost. When La Trobe University moved to abolish the National Centre for Hellenic Studies and Research in 2008, the archives that had been collected were at risk of being dispersed or lost. Revis did not stand idly by. He took personal action. He hired legal counsel and funded the ensuing legal battle, insisting that the material was not merely a collection of old documents. It was our history. It was the people who came before us. It was the newspapers that the first immigrants read, their letters, their photographs, the minutes of their organisations, their efforts to create schools, churches, clubs and a new life in a distant place. And this history had to be saved. The battle that lasted years The president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Bill Papastergiadis, describing Revis’s contribution, has pointed out that he funded the legal battle “on behalf of all of us.” The case was not easy. It took years and judicial mediation, in which Joseph Tsalanidis also participated, until a settlement was reached that ensured the Archives would remain protected and the history of the Greek community could continue to be preserved and studied. Revis, however, did not back down. He was not a man who sought publicity. He was, as people who knew him describe him, low-key, taciturn, and decisive. And perhaps that is why this particular story never became as well-known as it should have been. Because he himself never made a point of reminding others of what he had done. He didn’t save “papers.” He saved memory. That is perhaps the most important point of the story. The Dardalis Archives are not just a historical archive. They form part of the collective memory of Hellenism in Australia. Their value lies precisely in the fact that they allow future generations to learn how the Greek community was created, who the people were who built it, and what struggles preceded it in order to reach where we are today. If that collection had been lost or scattered, a piece of our identity would have been lost with it. Tassos Revis knew it. And that is why he stepped forward. Today, as the community prepares to bid him farewell, this story takes on a special symbolic significance. The man who helped preserve the memory of previous generations is now leaving his own story to the next. The Greek Community of Melbourne described him as a “community stalwart, supporter and benefactor”, while Bill Papastergiadis stressed that people like Revis are not easily replaced. And maybe that is the point. Communities are not just created by people in front of the cameras. They are also created by those who, when the difficult time comes, stand up and say: “This must not be lost.” Tassos Revis was one of them. On 10 September, the community will say its final “farewell” to him. But a part of him will forever remain where the pages of our history lie. In the Archives that he fought to save. And perhaps this is the most beautiful vindication of a man who did not seek the spotlight. He saved the memory of others and left his own memory behind. Safe travels, Tassos.
