Tanner’s Alley Leather celebrates 50th anniversary MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - Tanner’s Alley Leather Design Studio marked its 50th anniversary with a ribbon cutting alongside the Morgantown Area Partnership Thursday. Owner Charlie McEwuen opened the store in 1976 after serving with the 101st Airborne Division in the Army during the 1970s. He said making leather goods at the post craft store was one of his favorite hobbies during his service, and he decided to turn that hobby into his livelihood once he completed his service. “At the age of 21, thinking I knew everything there was, I opened the store,” McEwuen said. “It was looking back, you know, thinking about when you’re 21, you don’t know anything when you’re 21. So over the years, I proceeded to learn a lot, not only about leather, but about business, which is just as important of a part of it.” McEwuen said the support of the Morgantown community has remained constant over the years. “The one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the community support,” McEwuen said. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support from the community. So I’m very, very thankful and grateful for that.” Every item at Tanner’s Alley Leather is made by hand inside the store. The shop includes a selection of leather bags, wallets, notepads and other items. Cam Allen, with the Morgantown Area Partnership, said McEwuen has played a major role in Morgantown over the past 50 years. “He is an inspiration to many of us downtown,” Allen said. “I’m over the moon to be here, and I want to give a big thank you to Charlie and his team for everything they have done, not only at Tanner’s Alley, but in the community at large.” If you’d like to stop by, Tanner’s Alley Leather is located at 416 High Street and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Editor’s note: The video for this story will be added once it airs.
