Sweet relief: Odessa ice cream shop helps locals beat the West Texas heat ODESSA, Texas — With West Texas temperatures climbing into the triple digits, many residents are looking for any possible way to cool down. An Odessa ice cream shop, La Michoacana is offering more than just sweet treats, providing locals with a wide variety of cold options to beat the intense summer heat. Forecasters warn that the extreme temperatures are not letting up anytime soon, with intense heat expected to persist through mid-week. At La Michoacana, when temperatures rise, so does the demand for something cold. The shop offers plenty of options to help customers escape the outdoor conditions. Joanna Ramirez, a cashier and preparer at the shop, says customers can cool off with homemade ice cream—including unique flavors like cherry marshmallow—as well as refreshing mineral waters and even ceviche. “They come for the refreshing drinks like the mineral water and the clamato,” Ramirez said. “Those are the more popular drinks that people get when it’s super-hot outside.” The heat is not only changing what customers order, but it is also driving more traffic to the store throughout the day. “More customers have been coming lately to the store, which is something that we enjoy seeing—new faces—because of the hot weather,” Ramirez added. This spike in business is bringing in both new customers and regulars who have made the shop part of their weekly routine. Manuel Cervantes, an Odessa resident, visits frequently with his family to escape the sun. “We try to come at least three times a week,” Cervantes said. “I know it’s a lot, but it actually helps you to cool off.” With so many visits, Cervantes has had plenty of opportunities to explore the menu. “My favorite right now, which is my first time trying it, is the affogato,” Cervantes said. “One of our favorite snacks as well is gonna be the elote. It is very, very good—takes me back to when I was a kid.” For Cervantes and many other Odessa residents, the shop provides a sweet, cold way to take the edge off the relentless West Texas heat.
