How the Program Works The support is awarded through a public call for proposals. The general process involves the following steps: - Identify an eligible Brazilian work Select a work by a native-born or naturalised Brazilian author that was previously published in Portuguese in Brazil. - Develop the international publication plan Define the target language, market, publication format and intended readership. - Prepare the translation and publishing proposal Explain how the work will be translated, edited, published and distributed. - Prepare the project budget Clearly identify the costs for which financial assistance is being requested. - Submit the application Apply according to the requirements, format and deadline established in the relevant National Library Foundation public call. - Evaluation by the committee The Program Evaluation Committee reviews eligible proposals and determines whether partial or full support will be provided. - Publication and distribution Supported publishers proceed with the approved translation, editing, publication and distribution activities in accordance with the program conditions. Application and Budget Considerations A strong application should clearly connect the requested funding with the proposed publication activities. Applicants should ensure that: - The selected work satisfies the Brazilian publication and authorship requirements. - The requested amount is supported by a realistic budget. - Translation and editing costs are clearly explained. - The publication format is specified. - The target international market is identified. - Distribution and commercialisation plans are clearly described. - Any required counterpart contribution is addressed. - All required supporting documents are included. The program may provide partial rather than full funding, so publishers should ensure that they can finance any remaining eligible project costs. Common Mistakes to Avoid Applicants should pay particular attention to the following issues: - Selecting an ineligible work: The work must have been previously published in Portuguese in Brazil. - Ignoring authorship requirements: The author must be native-born or naturalised Brazilian. - Failing to demonstrate international distribution: Publishers should clearly explain how the supported publication will reach readers outside Brazil. - Submitting an unclear budget: Requested costs should be specific and connected to eligible activities. - Confusing new translations with reissues: The maximum support differs between these project types. - Missing call-specific requirements: Deadlines, documentation, counterpart requirements and other conditions must be checked in the applicable public call. - Providing insufficient publication details: The proposal should clearly identify the language, market, format and publishing plans.
