Sudburians can register for the Great Canadian Hike Article content This September, Greater Sudbury residents can lace up, grab a paddle or hop on a bike for the second annual TransCanada Trail Great Canadian Hike. This is a month-long challenge to collectively cover 100,000 km, while raising funds to keep Canada’s trail network accessible, resilient and thriving. Recommended Videos Greater Sudbury’s stretch of the trail features scenic local connections like the Bell Park boardwalk; wilderness routes like the rugged Voyageur Trail; and spectacular sections crossing floating boardwalks that traverse protected wetlands and offer views of a transforming, regreened landscape. The TransCanada Trail spans 30,000 km and connects all three of Canada’s coastlines, but a network that size needs constant upkeep, from erosion control and bridge repairs to keeping remote sections accessible. During last year’s inaugural hike, more than 2,100 participants logged 94,000 km in 30 days. This year’s fundraising goal is $100,000. At a moment when conversations about national identity and unity are front and centre, the Great Canadian Hike is a way for Canadians to physically connect with the country they call home. Registration is free and open at greatcanadianhike.ca. The challenge runs from Sept. 1-30.
