Especially in battery electric vehicles, magnesium alloys offer significant additional weight-saving potential compared with aluminum. However, the highly reactive nature of magnesium also places much higher demands on melting technology, process control, and dosing accuracy. At the China International Die Casting and Nonferrous Foundry Exhibition 2026 in Shanghai, StrikoWestofen showcased dedicated melting and dosing solutions specifically engineered for the industrial processing of magnesium alloys. The centerpiece of the presentation was StrikoMgMat, a melting and dosing system developed exclusively for magnesium applications. The integrated solution combines melting, holding, and highly precise dosing within a single system. Unlike modified aluminum furnaces, StrikoMgMat has been designed around the unique metallurgical characteristics of magnesium, providing the stable process conditions required for high-volume production. A key feature of the system is its closed furnace design combined with a controlled protective gas atmosphere. This significantly reduces oxidation and metal losses while ensuring consistently high melt quality. The system's precise dosing technology enables highly repeatable production processes and meets the demanding requirements of modern die casting operations manufacturing lightweight structural components. Responding to the growing trend toward larger structural castings and integrated die casting, StrikoWestofen also presented melting concepts for high-capacity die casting cells. By optimizing molten metal transfer and production line layouts, these solutions are designed to improve both productivity and process stability in the manufacture of large structural components. Alongside its magnesium technologies, the company also highlighted its strategy for decarbonizing melting operations. The fully electric eMelter furnace replaces conventional gas-fired systems with electric heating and, when powered by renewable electricity, can enable near carbon-neutral melting. In addition to reducing CO₂ emissions, the system offers high energy efficiency, lower metal losses, reduced maintenance requirements, and a significantly improved working environment. With its presentation in Shanghai, StrikoWestofen demonstrated the growing importance of dedicated melting technologies in supporting the transformation of the die casting industry. As magnesium continues to gain momentum as a lightweight engineering material, demand for furnace systems specifically designed for its safe and efficient processing is expected to increase significantly in the years ahead.
