By Dan Sarto | Monday, September 7, 2026 at 1:58pm Meryl Streep, Colman Domingo, Bill Hader and Tom Waits have joined the voice cast of Lincoln in the Bardo, Starburns Industries ' stop-motion and live-action hybrid feature based on George Saunders' Booker Prize-winning novel. Tom Hanks plays Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, in the film's live-action scenes. Duke Johnson, the Oscar-nominated co-director of Anomalisa, directs from a screenplay Saunders adapted from his own book; CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are handling sales at the upcoming TIFF: The Market. Saunders' 2017 novel, a New York Times bestseller and that year's Booker Prize winner, centers on one of the most intimate moments of Lincoln's life: his relationship with his recently deceased 11-year-old son, Willie. The film blends history and imagination, with an ensemble of characters living and dead, historical and invented, gathered around the boy in the bardo, the transitional state between death and rebirth that gives the book its name. Streep voices four parts: Abigail Blass, the ghost of a frugal widow who died destitute and alone; Elizabeth Crawford, the ghost of a disoriented, naive country woman; one of a host of angels sent to lure the lost souls out of the bardo; and one of a clique of demons trying to trap Willie Lincoln in the cemetery forever. Domingo voices Thomas Havens, the ghost of a former slave who, trying to make up for a life of passivity, initiates an unusual and history-changing union with the president. Hader voices Eddie Baron, a rough, obscene, working-class drinker who was run over by a carriage, along with his wife, while the two were out on a bender; he also voices one of the Three Rakes, young men frozen in perpetual shallowness because they died before they had ever loved. Waits voices Jaspar Randall, the ghost of a former dancehall performer who has been in the bardo so long he has been reduced to "a mere singing smudge on the earth," and one of the demons after Willie. They join the previously announced Willem Dafoe, Jonathan Bailey and Peter Dinklage, who voice Rev. Everly Thomas, Hans Vollman and Roger Bevins. Three-time Academy Award winner Streep most recently returned as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and is part of the ensemble of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. Two-time Oscar nominee Domingo's credits include Rustin and Sing Sing, and he picked up two Emmy nominations this season for HBO's Euphoria and Netflix's The Four Seasons. Three-time Emmy winner Hader starred in HBO's Barry after more than 150 episodes of Saturday Night Live. Oscar nominee Waits most recently starred in Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother, which won Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. Johnson, Paul Young and Devon Young Rabinowitz produce for Starburns Industries, with Hanks and Gary Goetzman producing for Playtone. Steven Shareshian, Aaron Mitchell and Saunders executive produce. Starburns Industries was founded in 2010 by Johnson, Dino Stamatopoulos, James Fino and Dan Harmon and works in stop-motion and 2D animation; it recently named industry veteran Paul Young CEO. Its first project was the Emmy-winning Community Christmas special Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas, written by Stamatopoulos and Harmon and directed by Johnson. The studio earned its first Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations in 2016 for Anomalisa, which Johnson produced and co-directed with Charlie Kaufman. Its stop-motion series Moral Orel won two Emmys, and Rick and Morty, which originated at Starburns, won two more. Dan Sarto is Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Animation World Network.
